Three thousand feet above sea level in the misty mountains of Jamaica, some of the worlds finest Arabica beans are hand picked on their way to becoming Blue Mountain Coffee. Halfway around the world, plump spring barley grows to maturity in the loamy soil of North America while aromatic hops are cutivated to exacting standards. Here in our kettles, these three special ingredients are blended to create a heady mixture of sweet sugar, dark roast, and complex flavor. Please enjoy this brew in moderation.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson! Deep brown/black appearance with a brown head- not a ton of head or retention but decent. Roasty dark chocolate, somewhat acidic, roasty, earthy, coffee aroma with a touch of vanilla. Roasty dark chocolate, moderate espresso, a touch burnt malty, slightly charred, light vanilla, somewhat astringent flavor. I believe this bottle is one year old and the coffee must have faded fairly considerably over the past year, as it retains more of the acidity than the bean element. I need to pick up another one fresh.

65 cl bottle @ home, no BBE info
Aroma has mocha, hops and some vegetables. Flavour has lots of mocha with some dark chocolate, hints of licorice and vegetables. Finish has some fruity hops. Smooth and somewhat creamy palate, that could be richer though. Had two glasses of this, the one at room temperature was better.

Bottled 650ml. -from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Deep black coloured, small creamy brown head, woody and coffee nose. Roasted malt, heavy roasted coffee and dark chocolate with a bit too aromatic hops. Also hint of wood in rather roasty and slight bitter finish. Alcohol well balanced. Superb and enjoyable imperial stout. 11.0%

On tap @ Beer Temple. Very dark, but not quite opaque. Beige creamy head. Aroma’s of caramel, sticky toffee, roast, sweet coffee. Flavor is sweet, with notes of coffee/mocha. Quite strong alcohol feel & full body. Finishes with roast and ash and quite bitter. I get the feeling that the coffee-kick is somewhat overpowered by the sweetness. Not bad though.

650ml bottle, 11.0% abv, kept in my cellar for more than a year, bought at Vinmonopolet Vika in Oslo in late August ’10. One-finger thick, fawn-coloured head that stayed well in the glass for a while, and left fragile lacing behind. Deep rosewood body colour. Fresh dough to the nose followed by a pleasant smell of chocolate and dark fruits. Roasted coffee beans in flavour well blended with liquorice, vanilla and dark chocolate. Lingering dark bitter fruits to the finish. Subdued alcohol warmth. Silky and dry in the mouth. Saturday sipper par excellence! (At home in Tromsø, 10.09.2011).

Draft at Lemon Tree, $3 on Half-Price Draft Tuesdays. Yay! It’s a very dark pour. Probably not pushed by nitro, but it’s very thin head looks like it. And the smell is more like chocolate; then coffee and a very rich, malty smell, too. or not. A very rich taste. Very mild; not astringent or overly roasty. Definitely a milk stout. Just a few sips and I finally start to get the notes of a creamy coffee. I didn’t know the abv count when I tried it, but not that I see the stats, I can say it’s a very smooth stout with no alcohol heat to it. Milk sugar sweetness is prominent, but not too much, so not as much need for hops. Wonderful beer, and a bargain tonight!

bottle shared: probably a 2010 vintage but there was no date indication on the bottle, poured pitch black with a mocha head, smells like strongly of roasted coffee with some roasted malt & pure chocolate smells buried underneath, smell feels a bit muted, possibly the result of aging, taste is very briefly sweet upfront followed by a much strong aftertaste of bitter, pure coffee beans (which is the main flavour), strong presence of dark malt, bitter chocolate & cocoa, some roast, substantial body, this will definitely get you, your coffee kick on
