Brekle’s Brown has a coppery brown color and unusual depth of flavor with hints of citrus which makes for richness and complexity without heaviness. The classic, all-malt, single-hop American brown ale.

Trivia: in 1871 brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived in San Francisco from Germany. He purchased an old beer-and-billiards saloon near Russian Hill and transformed it into the little craft brewery that — twenty-five years later — would be renamed Anchor.

Bottle. A- Caramel, toffee, malts, slightly sweet, citrus, toast, nuts, dark fruits. A- Reddish brown color, clear liquid, dark tan head. T- Caramel, citrus, mild bitterness, malts, slighty sweet, toast, toffee, raisins. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- Unlike any brown ale I’ve had. A unique taste of malts and citrus. Gotta love those citrus hops and who would’ve thought they would work so well with caramel and toffee notes. Solid all around. I did prefer it much more cold than at room temp but a rich complex taste like no other.

Bottle at ALEhouse, Riga. Pours brown with a beige head, looking like a brown ale should look like. Beer is nicely chilled, so aromas are difficult to get at first - but when they come out, then there is some caramel, a bit of roast and surprising many herbal notes. Taste is clean I guess that at the time when brown ales were the most common beers (as pale malts were too difficult to produce) then they couldn’t actually make this clean taste. Not sure if I like it that much (maybe I prefer a bit malteir brown ales) but it definitely is good and well executed version.

Bottle, 0.355l. Hazy copper brown color with medium creamy tan-like head and good lacing. Aroma of citrus, dark fruits, pine, caramel and medicine. Taste starts with rich light sweet malt, follows by refreshing lemon, herbs and notes of alcohol, while finish is heavy bitter. Full body, thick texture and fizzy natural carbonation. Excellent, very similar to Belgian strong ales...
