Brekle’s Brown has a coppery brown color and unusual depth of flavor with hints of citrus which makes for richness and complexity without heaviness. The classic, all-malt, single-hop American brown ale.

Trivia: in 1871 brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived in San Francisco from Germany. He purchased an old beer-and-billiards saloon near Russian Hill and transformed it into the little craft brewery that — twenty-five years later — would be renamed Anchor.

On tap at Avenue Pub. Pours a dark brown with medium creamy beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, dark chocolate, cocoa. Medium mouthfeel with nice roasted malts and chocolate with nice lingering sweet finish. Enjoyed this one.

Bottle courtesy of Hydes. Clear, dark, reddy brown. Thin, sticky, lasting, clotted cream coloured head. Fusty banana. Toffee apple. Brown sugar. Taste is initially sweet. Then mostly dry spiciness. Chew on the palate. Finish is banana Toffo sweet. Never had this before. Is it supposed to taste like a Doppelbock? Anyway, it does.

Bottle from AmmersinO, Vienna. Dark copper, brownish, clear body, with medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma of caramel, dried fruits, roast, some citrus. Tastes of caramel, red and dark fruits, banana, toast, citrus. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy, with a moderate carbonation and it finishes fruity, medium bitter, slightly roasty, slightly sour. Very good, complex, greatly balanced and quaffable! One of the best brown ales I’ve had so far.

Fresh bottle drunk in 2011
Sandy brown body, with deep mahogany and graham cracker hues. Clear with a moderate amount of off-white head that lingers around a cover.
Hoppiness in the nose is quite aromatic and intertwined pretty well with the lightly toasted, nutty and rather sweet brown bread meets light milk chocolate maltiness. Citrus and a touch of tropical fruitiness are certainly not resinous or overly aggressive, nor is the alcohol problematic. Quite simple, with a medium strength overall.
At first the juicy hoppiness really shines, lending notes of lychee and candied orange, nicely combining with the sweet chocolate-like maltiness. Things dry out, with some huskiness/crackeriness (great word, crackeriness) and the carbonation takes hold and breaks up the maltiness. As it warms and breathes, with most anchor beers, the body becomes loose and quite watery, the sweetness builds up on the finish and the beer loses a lot of its initial pleasantness. Still, this is a fine, drinkable brown ale with a well-done hop profile and ample bitterness.

Thanks for the "use opener" hint on the cap. It helped a lot. Smell of hops, spices. Dark brown colour with faint of red. Small beige head. Aroma of caramel, hops, some yeast and cocoa. Sugary finish. Very mixed flavours, but still nicely balanced. Some bitterness, medium sweet. Rich and lively carbon, light body.

She pours a semi-dark brown and leaves the same colored body with a slim white fingered head that dies and leaves some light lacing trimming the top of the glass and slightly clinging to it. The smell is mostly dark fruity, but there’s some malty nuttiness coming through. The taste is mainly sweet through the dark fruits, however, I do get the nuts come out, smooth fruity/almost raisin-like aftertaste; a slight fruity yet watery finish. The palate has a light to medium body that’s pretty sessionable, hmmm... carbonation is very smooth, whoah, I wasn’t expecting this to be so smooth for an American Brown as I thought there would have been some sort of added \"hops\" to it like a normal American Brown. Oh well, no worries. Overall, this is a good Brown Ale that ends up kinda reminding me of Right Brain’s and Schmaltz’s Hebrew Nut Brown Ale, sorry to compare to whoever might be reading this, but I’m glad I found at least three \"brown ales\" now that smell and taste pretty much the same, I’m pretty sure I’d have this again.
