Brekle’s Brown has a coppery brown color and unusual depth of flavor with hints of citrus which makes for richness and complexity without heaviness. The classic, all-malt, single-hop American brown ale.

Trivia: in 1871 brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived in San Francisco from Germany. He purchased an old beer-and-billiards saloon near Russian Hill and transformed it into the little craft brewery that — twenty-five years later — would be renamed Anchor.

355ml bottle, beer gift from Finn, thanks. Frothy, fawn-coloured head, mostly diminishing. Clear, orange-brown body appearance. Nose is ripe orange and caramel joined by a basement touch. Flavours of brown malts mingled with raisin, pumpkin and citrus. Bittersweet ending. Medium bodied. Interesting blend, partially successful (Tromsø 10.01.2014).

Bottle: Nose is strong malt leading to toffee, apples, leading to some citrus tones. Well balanced nose for a brown ale. Taste is malt, apples, through to sweet brown ale tones then a citrus IPA ish note before back to a brown ale. Very sweet in the finish. This was an interesting attempt to do an American style Brown Ale, but does not work for me.

Draft at a tasting event. From notes. Citrus and caramel with a decent tropical fruit kick. A little bitter grapefruit in there too. Not too bad.

23/XII/13 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from BierNavigatie (webshop, NL) @ home - BB: VII/2014 (2013-1170)

Little cloudy red brown beer, huge irregular creamy head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: mocha, caramel, quite some chocolate, sweet, malts, sugary, strawberry touch, mocha. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: little sour, some caramel, toast, mocha, pretty bitter, bread yeast, reminds a lot about Rochefort yeast, little sweet. Aftertaste: bitter hops, mocha, caramel, burnt toast, yeasty touch, again the Rochefort resemblance is striking. Slightly sour touch. Can't believe that this is brewed with Citra. Not sure this is the best use for that hop, but it's a remarkably pleasing beer anyway. :-)

Bottle shared by Cuso, thank you! Aroma raisin, dried fruit, very nice. Hazy ruby-brown colour. Taste is caramel, light fruity, light light woody. Interesting brew.

(Bottle, 0.355 l - BBE 9/2015, from Alko, 20131129) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramel, fruitiness and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, caramel, molasses, raisins and bitterness. Afteraste had caramel and bitterness. Weird brew. Tastes a bit like oxidised bitter even though this should be a quite fresh bottle.

Bottled Alko. Clear deep copper color, steady beige head. Caramel, some faint hoppyness, perhaps a bit toffee. Light to medium-bodied, fizzy. Coffee, toasted toffee, nutty and bready. Not very sweet. Some lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. Somewhat a bit too simple for my liking.

Comes with a dark brown color and a very small tan/dirty head. The aroma is sweet along with some maltiness. There is also some chocolate which is very gentle, but without the roasted aroma often accompanying it. Taste is bitter, roasted and bitter, although not so much so in the finish. The bitter aftertaste stays with you for a long time. All in all, a nice brew, not strong and very drinkable.

Location: 12 oz bottle from World Market - Houston Galleria, 10/9/13, Rating #3232

Aroma:The nose has roasted malts, sweet fruit, caramel, and brown sugar
Appearance: It pours a dark reddish-brown color with a frothy beige head and sheeting lace
Flavor: Tastes medium sweet, lots of caramel, some lighter roast and brown sugar, mild hops
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a smooth, slick feel, and a soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This is a pretty nice brown ale. There's a nice mix of malty components here. It's pretty sweet, and could probably use a little more hop balance, but it is a solid beer.

Bottle at The Fiddler, Den Haag. Poured a cloudy murky brown colour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is malt yeast and fruit. The flavour is medium bitter with lots of roasted malt, liqourice, red berry fruit and alcohol on the smooth but slightly alcoholic palate. A super beer but needs more chewy malt and nuts!
