Brekle’s Brown has a coppery brown color and unusual depth of flavor with hints of citrus which makes for richness and complexity without heaviness. The classic, all-malt, single-hop American brown ale.

Trivia: in 1871 brewer Gottlieb Brekle arrived in San Francisco from Germany. He purchased an old beer-and-billiards saloon near Russian Hill and transformed it into the little craft brewery that — twenty-five years later — would be renamed Anchor.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 19C). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: very nice balanced aroma of malt with notes of chocolate, caramel with hop aromas (citric and some pine and resin). APPEARANCE: ruby color and clear. dark ivory moderate head with moderate retention. TASTE: medium sweet malty flavour with notes of caramel and some bread crust (mailllard compounds), balanced with a piny hop flavour. medium bitterness with a medium-dry finish. PALATE: medium body with moderate carbonation. OVERALL: a very nice combination of malty and hop aromas and flavours. recommended.

Medium brown head. Clear red body with strong carbonation. Perfumy fruit and wild berry aroma with resiny notes. Sweetish wild berry and oranges taste with perfumy spicy fruity notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry-acidic spicy orangey Fisherman’s Friend aftertaste with artificial resiny fruity notes. Not bad, but much too artificial and perfumy. (0.355l bottle, from Vinbudin Kringlan, Reykjavik.)

Pours a brown color. Thin head and a aroma of malt and nuts. The flavor was good with a hint of sweet malt and nuts, maybe a touch of chocolate.

0,355 l bottle from EDEKA Mohr, best before 11/2015. Clear, dark brownish red with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Intense aroma of molasses, toffee, dried plums and candy sugar. Very sweet taste of dried plums, molasses, blackcurrant, candy sugar and hints of coffee and chocolate. Short, slightly bitter finish which serves as a sufficient counterpart to the sweetness. Full bodied, oily and chewy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Much on the sweet side but I like it. Huge aroma, tasty and a satisfying mouthfeel. Good!

12oz bottle from Masuyo’s Liquors in Asagaya. Poured into a shaker pint. Deep chocolate brown with a modest off-white head. Big roasted malt aroma present with nice prune and fig as well. Roasted malty taste with a slight bitterness. Sweet on the palate mostly. Mouthfeel is watery. Not that interesting.

Flasche (355 ml) von Bierzwerg.de. - Tiefes Kupferrot, klar, kurzlebiger Schaum.
