Aug 2006: I was very lucky, my parents had a caravan positioned in Southwold every summer. Drinking Adnams bitter in ’The Sole Bay Inn’, which is across the village green from the brewery is about as good as it gets! The beer has a mid-brown colour, which seems to change, almost light-brown, if the sun comes out and you are sat on one of the three benches outside. Hops and malty flavours battle it out in every mouthful, to let you know that a good quality British bitter is in your hand. The sights and smell of the brewery, help to ensure the beer just flows down the throat, this is a great session bitter and ideal for lunchtime drinking, while people watching, during a sunny English summers day (not that we get many).

Cask at the Thomas Becket, Canterbury. Pours copper with a thin head. Aroma is bready malt and a touch of sulphur. Taste is bready malt with a little dark fruit. A little egg in the aftertaste. Not in the best condition, me thinks.

Tiny coarse offwhite head quickly shrinks into thin film. Beautiful bright deep amber body. Light floral caramelly wooden aroma with spicy lacquer notes. Dry-sweetish resiny wooden lacquer taste with spicy caramel notes. Light body. Slightly astringent mouthfeel. Dry floral herbal wooden aftertaste, a bit musty, and a touch watery. Nice, and highly sessionable. (0.5l cask, The Bridge House, Barnes, London.)

Cask at the Anthologist. Clear copper pour with a medium, white head. Standard aroma, some leafy bitters, earth, bready malts. Flavor isn’t bad, lightly sweet with toasty bread and mild, citric bitters. Light to medium in body with fine to average carbonation. Dries out in the finish with modest malt sweetness, faint citrus and earthy hops that hit the throat. Unexciting overall but not bad.

(Cask at Courtfield, Earls Court, London) This was a decent bitter. Aroma was little bit disappointing, wrong balance of malts and toffee for my nose. Flavour was ok and all the components were the ones bitters usually have. Aftertaste was bit more bitter than I expected. Easy to drink.
