This is a higher alcohol version of the British Mackeson Stout. Formerly brewed in the United States by Boston Beer Co. at their Cincinnati location (the old Hudepohl brewery). Presently brewed at the Carib Brewery in Trinidad (and St. Kitts).

This is the version that is commonly exported to South East Asia

Like every other hard-worker that you know, you consider Friday to be the best day of the week because at the end of it is a reward for five days of traffic, deadlines and trying to exceed your bosses’ expectations. Besides looking forward to two days without an alarm, an after-work ‘lime’ is when you permit yourself to indulge in something you’ve had a hankering for all week – It’s dark, on the brink of sweetness and one is definitely not enough. With a designated driver on duty, you place your first order for a Mackeson. It’s the perfect warm-up for everything that the rest of the night has to offer. It never disappoints and ensures that you don’t either.

This instantly satisfying, full-bodied milk stout is perfect for a generation that thrives on immediate and long-lasting gratification in their personal, professional and pleasurable pursuits. Its roasted malt aroma is a superb opener for its dark, creamy, semi-sweet goodness that finishes with a hint of a coffee-like flavour.

Bouteille 330ml.

Got a single from the LCBO (but comes in 6-pack), written on front label BB NOV /13. Pours a very dark colour with little red highlights. Big light brown-coloured head with great retention and some dirty lacing. Coffee aromas were released at first, but left pretty quickly, remaining with hoppy grass smell. After breathing some more, sweet caramel comes out, but all of this is very mild. The mouthfeel is between oily and creamy. The taste is pretty mild as well. Roasted malts, a little sweetness, raisins, grass and chocolate. Thankfully, this one is not too sweet, as listed in the ingredients are lactose (milk sugar), sugar and caramel. Because it is mild all-around, this one is easier to drink, but the sweetness will still, eventually get to you.

A little sweet for my liking, though still a very decent offering. Pours pitch black with decent head and lacing. Aroma of coffee and lots of caramel. Finishes sweet and coffee bitter. Average carbonation, consistency on the syrupy side. Bottle.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market. Thanks zvikar. Black with a light brown head. Aroma of milk chocolate, some roastiness, an oxidized note and some cookies. Sweet roasty flavor, a bit sugary, with chocolate, lactose and a bit of caramel. Medium-bodied. A bit too sweet but decent.

Refrigerated 11.2 oz. brown bottle poured into a shaker. Pours opaque black with small dark brown hightlights and small light brown head. Nice medium small bubble lacing, thick body, medium carbonation, and wonderful lactose aroma. Taste is milk chocolate, caramel malt, lactose, and some herbal hops. Nothing over the top, almost flawless, this is the epitome of milk stouts. I really love this one, I wonder if I am getting soft with my ratings.

I was very surprised to find this in Tobago (June 2008). The label said ’THE ORIGINAL AND GENUINE IMPORTED EST 1742’ but in small print it claimed it was brewed and bottled at Carib etc, etc (for Interbrew UK Ltd). 275ml Brown bottle poured into a half-pint tumbler on the hotel balcony. Really dark, jet black in fact, with a good deep tan head. Chocolate aroma, sweet dark caramel, malty too. Rich, thick and creamy in the mouthfeel, treacle flavours came through as well. A lovely drink, just as good as the real Mackeson that I remember from my youth.
