Bottle courtesy of Glen (cheers Glen) consumed at home Sunday 12th March 2017 Pours black with a small head. Roasty and with some spent coffee grains, a little bitter cocoa linger. It is not super smooth or creamy in fact it has a slightly rough street fighter feel about it, good stuff. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov16 3.8

Bottle from Malt Attacks, from one of the proverbial ’children’ of The Kernel along the so-called ’Bermondsey Mile’ in London. Very heavy gusher, black liquid flooded out of the bottle neck upon opening. After hastily pouring half of the beer in the glass in an attempt to save as much as possible, the foam kept building up in the bottle till it began creeping out of the neck again. Anyway, I eventually captured a jet black beer with a towering, dense, whipped cream-like, rocky head of tan colour, diminishing but remaining thick and stable for a very long time. Aroma cannot hide the infection which is most likely the cause of the gushing, in the form of a lactic, sour cream- or spoilt goat cheese-like sourishness. Other than that and after this ’lacticity’ has faded a bit, I get the (probably) more intended aromas of cold black coffee and coffee grounds, beef stock, bayleaf, ashes, (strong) cherries, blackcurrant, caramel, roasted peanuts, rosemary, brown rhum, marmelade, cooked green cabbage (but not in the DMS way), cold tea and black peppercorns; in all, not typical RIS-like at all, but interesting and not really unpleasant. A vivid, somewhat estery fruitiness of sweet cherries and sourish blackberry, blackcurrant and even some lime opens the palate, medium carbonated generally speaking but certainly overcarbonated for this style, with a smooth, slick caramelly and toasted maltiness ensuing, suffering a bit from the lactic infection, but less so than I had feared. There is a clear ’dirty powderiness’ to the mouthfeel as well - which undoubtedly has something to do with fermentation (dead yeast) that went out of control here. A strong, mouth-filling roasted bitterness dominates the end phase, a bit ashy, while the lactic acidity and the fruity esters keep fooling around in its shadows. Earthy, peppery hop bitterness is present as well and adds further bitterness to the finish. Alcohol, though noticeable and warming, remains fairly well hidden, all things considered; the last flavour remaining in the back of the mouth, is the ashy roasted bitterness. A rough parcours I’d say, reminding me a bit of some of those new Belgian strong stouts: fermentation clearly failed here and got infected somewhere, but apart from this flaw, this beer lacks body and is too much carbonated for a stout of this strength. Not an imperial stout by any means, this feels more like an export stout. An infected one, alas - seeing the other reviews here, I just had bad luck, I guess.
