Belgians say, “Op uw gezondheid’” when toasting, but you don’t have to speak Flemish to appreciate the bold, complex flavors of fig dipped in dark chocolate, ripe fruit and toffee in this immense Ale. Op uw gezondheid!

This bottle has been chilling in my fridge since at least January- before we went on deployment. Deep brown with a burnt white head. Dark ripe fruit, dark caramalized sugars, spice, figs, chocolate. Full bodied. Finish has a nice peppery bite.

A dark brown beer, medium clarity. Swwet raisin bread aroma, liquid small sweetness without being too much but a bit more than needed. Flavor is more compact with a lightly grainy and buckwheat malt character. Needs some time to mellow a bit. Sweet raisin aftertaste. Not estry and no alchy. So, pretty damn good.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, perfectly sized three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of yeast, alcohol, malt, toffee, nuts, earth, caramel and a bunch of pit fruits - nice and fragrant. Medium to Full-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Strong yeast flavours up front with a big belgian yeast strain showing bananas, cloves and a deep bitter complexity, coupled with some sweetness from pit fruits, grain and a good deal of alcohol. Aftertaste shows a robust maltiness with a nice caramel finish and some bitterness throughout from the deep yeast and especially from the strong alcohol flavours. Overall, a nice rich beer full of complexity and interestingly enough, most comparable with Rochefort 10 or (don’t get excited) Westvleteren 12, but this of course isn’t as complex or deep, but shows similarities, which is nice for an American producer. I sampled this split 37,5 corked and caged bottle purchased from Pear Delicatessen in Seattle, Washington [State] on 18-February-2016 for US$5,40 sampled at home in [the real] Washington on 03-June-2016.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Dark mahogany color, with small compact head. The aroma is too mild, not much comes through. Good body strength, less than expected though; some caramel flavor, with light residual sweetness, but also a fundamental vegetable character; lightly nutty in the final, oily, with some boozy alcohol, and low bitterness.
Despite the name, this has very little Belgium in it. Rather cloying.
