The granddaddy of English ales, this beer pours a tawny amber and boasts a huge malt flavour. Aging in whiskey barrels for 10 months has added a woody vanilla note that will age beautifully. This beer begs to be cellared.

ABC Roxy Benefit: Poured a murky brown with thin off-white head. Aroma is strong malts, vanilla, wood, caramel. Taste is light vanilla booze, woodsy, strong caramel malts and sticky.

Taster at the brewery. Leftovers from the barleywine festival that took place 10 days ago. Drank as BW aged in whiskey (read bourbon) barrels for 48months. It looks like a shit - some cloudy brown substance without head. Aroma is good though with lots of bourbon, fruity, some nuts notes. Taste is similar, supercomplex - boozy, creamy, fruity, bourbony. Whoa this is huge! Great sipper! The only wish - it should not look like a shit, lol.

2015 vintage. Well it doesn’t look good...BC never did figure out how to make an attractive barley wine. So light brown, murky, and flat-looking. Sweet, yeasty of all things. The malts are that sort of generic sticky pale syrup sort of thing - lacking in nuance. The influence of the barrel is rounded, touch of wood here, dash of vanilla there. All told though, the base beer isn’t all that great. Functional barley wine and that’s it.

Great malt and molasses aroma. Minimal head. Well balanced molasses flavour with a dry finish. Alcohol is hidden well. A good barley wine.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Slightly hazy orangey brown with a tiny bit of very fine sediment and minimal off-white head. Caramel, vanilla, oak, and bourbon. Slightly boozy, light-medium body. A little bit Innis & Gunn - like as mentioned.

650 ml bottle. Pours a light mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of old oak, raisins, stale whiskey, and toasted malts. Flavors of wood, grass, toasted malts and alcohol. Reminds me of Innis & Gunn stuff. Not sure if it’s got the necessary depth to age but the flavors are still young and at odds. Maybe.

2017-06-01, draught at the brewery, vintage 2014, 7-4-6-3-12=32
Murky amber color with no head. The aroma is lightly fruity and malty. Medium body strength, some malt flavor, but fundamentally lacking of malt depth; North American esters, hint of bubblegum, short final, and not even a serious hopping level.
Disappointing.

2016-01-08, draught at the brewery, vertical tasting 2014 vs 2015
The 2015 is dark amber and clean. Malt aroma, milder than it ought to be, but with a note of Sherry. The body is much thinner than expected, maybe more boozy; some malt and caramel flavor, some bourbon, correct bitterness level, bit ending with a lot of alcohol.
Controversial.

The 2014 is amber and cloudy, maybe because it’s the very end of the keg. The aroma is milder than the 2015, less malt, but it has a delicate fruity touch. Mellower, rounder and fruitier, also less carbonated; the malt flavor is there but a bit shallow, moderate bourbon cask but well integrated, correct bitterness, and pleasant alcohol warmth.
Nothing exceptional, but the aging mellowed out some character, bound the elements, and produced something a tad more harmonious than 2015.

Parallel 49 Barley Wine is not one of the great, it lacks of malt depth and complexity, but it’s still a decent drink, and it’s not too heavy with the barrel character.

2014-12-05, draught at the brewery, 7-5-7-3-13=35
Cloudy dark amber color, with thin creamy head. Served too cold. Aroma of young oak and its vanilla character. Malty but without depth, sweet, not syrupy, a lot of oak and vanilla, even a bit soapy, and eventually getting cloying and difficult to drink up the sleeve glass. Ordinary bitterness. The alcohol kicks in and it gets a bit boozy.
Unexciting.

On tap at Parallel 49, pours a cloudy dark orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma is brings out rather cheap whiskey barrels, caramel, dark fruits and wood. Flavour matches accordingly, with a good mix of whiskey barrels, wood, caramel malt and brown sugar. Everything is pretty cohesive and lovely balanced, but there is also a harshness to it and lack of elegance due to the cheap JD whiskey barrels. Good stuff for what it is.
