St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is Quebec’s tribute to the late 1700’s English Imperial Stouts, brewed for the Russian courts of Catherine the Great.
Made from a blend of barley malts, St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, resulting in an outstanding hop-character with a smooth finish. Bourbon wood-aged, this full-bodied ale has a rich, smoky aroma with hints of vanilla, expresso and chocolate.
Serve St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout between 13°C and 15°C, preferably in a port glass or a brandy snifter. This stout will improve with age for a number of years. Store in a cool, dark place.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of Glouglouburp I believe. Deep brown/black appearance with a brown head. Somewhat peaty/smoky, dark chocolate, somewhat woody, vanilla, light coffee aroma. Tangy, a bit fruity, rich warming bourbon, a little smoky (though not as much as the nose), rich vanilla, nice coffee, somewhat herbal flavor with a fairly warming, boozy finish. Pretty tasty smoky/bourbon flavor.

Refrigerated bottle set out on the counter for a while. Pours coal black with finger and half of substantial light brown head. Little lacing, medium body, and roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, some bourbon, hint of oak, hint of vanilla and finishes nice bitter slight dry hops. This is similar to KBS, a little harder to drink, and not quite as good.

Smells of rich roasted malts and a lick of alcohol, a bit of sweetness. Tastes of bitter chocolate, espresso and I even not a little bit of raison or blackberry lurking around. Strong body, dark mocha head. Had a 330ml bottle of this.

2010 bottle, 13C. Viscous pour. Black with a large tan head that fades to a fat coat. Aroma of sweet coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, bubblegum (I guess that’s the bourbon). Taste has bitter roasted malt, sweet caramel, coffee, wood. Taste is bolder and harsher than suggested by the nose - quite charred. Sweetness and bourbon flavours become more prominent as it warms - starting at 15C would have been better. Finish is long with bitter chocolate. Citrus hop flavours poke out at the end too. Pretty good, but not a patch on their Oatmeal Stout. [3.8] 2012 Bottle, 15C. Much as before - lots going for it, but harsh roastiness and over-prominent bourbon. Really nice chocolate. Needs a fair bit more time?

Purchased at Marché Omni and comes in a scotch tube, 2010 edition. Pours a real dark brown (almost black) with hardly any ruby highlights. Its head is huge, creamy, everlasting, and moca coloured. Aromas has lots of molasses, roasted and caramel malts, with hints of chocolate, coffee, licorice and spices. Oily mouthfeel with no burns from the high alcohol. Much of the aromas are found in the taste, but this is where the vanilla shows up (from the bourbon aged-wood). Quite a nice treat from McAuslan... always pleasant to see another one from this great brewer.
