St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is Quebec’s tribute to the late 1700’s English Imperial Stouts, brewed for the Russian courts of Catherine the Great.

Made from a blend of barley malts, St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, resulting in an outstanding hop-character with a smooth finish. Bourbon wood-aged, this full-bodied ale has a rich, smoky aroma with hints of vanilla, expresso and chocolate.

Serve St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout between 13°C and 15°C, preferably in a port glass or a brandy snifter. This stout will improve with age for a number of years. Store in a cool, dark place.

Comes in a scotch-box cardboard thing, but the bottle itself is the same as any other you’d get. A shame, really, but then perhaps it has something to do with Quebec’s weird bottle deposit laws that would banish such things to endless frustration for consumers? I am not one to speculate; though I just did. But anyways, this pours jet black with a dark chocolate mousse head, the likes of which I don’t think I’ve seen before. Aroma is chocolate syrup, coffee, dirty motor oil. The flavour is deep and rich with chocolate and barley, burnt oak, coffee flavours, all that stouty goodness, and then a nice dry finish to boot. But after awhile it gets too bitter and too thick; it needs a little more balance, a little more drinkability. Right now it’s very good but just too difficult to down.

12oz bottle pours an oily, opaque black with a thin, tan head. Nose is malty, nutty, woody, lightly boozy. Flavor is sweet, brown sugar, grapey, coffee, light bread. Some nice, mellow barrel in the flavor. Full bodied, sweet finish.

Courtesy of jcwattsrugger. Pours deep darkness with nice looking dark mocha head. The aroma is modest in strength with chocolate malt balls, dark to burnt malts, some chocolate, vanilla and faint spicy oak. The taste is rich with dark roasted malts, burnt malts that get to the point of being a touch ashy to midway followed by fudge brownie coming to the surface every now and then. There’s a smokiness surrounding the flavor too as well as some spicy black licorice. Very nice.

341mL bottle sent from Dany / Glouglouburp (Thanks!). Pours deep black with a dark brown / coffee-like head - beautiful. Rich aroma of bourbon upfront, with secondary hints of smoke, wood, and a little alcohol. Flavour is certainly unique - rich wood-like roasted malt, bourbon and smoke, with burnt espresso on the finish - not a hint of sweetness to be found. Delectable - glad I was able to try this.

Velvety black, with a rusty shine, and a dark-beige , fine & thick head, slightly irregular. Pours viscously, emitting a very rich chocolate/chocolate wafer nose with moccha, burnt notes and roasted Brasil nuts. After some time, the aromas converge to a rich mix of roast, rum & finally, but unmistakably, Bourbon. Impressive. Bitterish-sweet with a little, ever-burning edge; roasted, overdone toffee, moccha, roasted crusts, very long-lasting and very gradually fading. Bourbon again very present, the more as it warms up. Bitter & sweet come together better by then. Rich, velvety, viscous & burning MF, alcoholwarming. Good IRS, Bourbon infused, but just this makes it a tad to the sweet side. Grand merci à Fred & co!

Bottle courtesy of Mes, Sim and Justin shared at Merton Summer Beer Festival 17-07-10 Pours shark eye black with a tan head. The aroma is burnt woody, coffee and with a generous amount of chocolate there also. Taste is more of the same but in the mouth this is quite substantial its oily and thick, chewy and bitter. Great stuff but difficult to rate fairly as had to keep taking snatches of this between serving people. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

Bouteille 341ml.
