“Doppel” means double and this beer is double in every way. Bayern Doppelbock became an instant legend when Bayern introduced it in Missoula in December of 1987. Unlike its top-fermenting counterparts, this hearty German dark lager does not have the rough bite of a porter or a stout. Bayern Doppelbock is dark, smooth and has plenty of hops (Saaz & Hallertauer Perle) and malt. It has a starting gravity of 18 degrees Plato. Bayern Doppelbock is available in bottles and on draft from November through February, just in time for the holidays and the coldest months. Please enjoy this festive beer in moderation and leave your car at home if you are planning to celebrate with Doppelbock.

Pours a clear mahogany with an inch to 2 inches of tannish foam.

Sweet smelling with doses of brown sugar and molasses and a candy like caramel.

Some roasted malt added to what I got in the smell and I end up with a great tasting Doppelbock. I don’t detect any bitterness and why would I want any? Lol.

Pretty thick mouthfeel with perfect carbonation.

This is SO good!

Chestnut colour. Sweetish, mostly toffeeish. Straightforward bock, sweet with a touch of boozier soy sauce character in the finish but overall pretty by the book, and not bringing anything special to the table. --- Beer merged from original tick of Doppelbock on 04 Mar 2006 at 14:15 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 3 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 3. Original review text: Very dark brown. Rasiny, lightly toffeeish aroma. Fusel character...ack. Chewy, alcohol, fruity with lots of malt and nuts. Get rid of the higher alcohols and fruitiness and it still lacks the sort of bright, complex maltiness that a beer of this style should have.

12oz bottle split with Pruf. This is a darker doppelbock, in the vain of Celebrator. Unfortunately, it takes on too much E. European dark lager character with a syrupy dark malt character. Kind oF sweet and sticky and not well lagered. Similarly, the alcohol is a little too present. After the dunker I had really high hopes but this was just middling.

Bottle thanks to Jake65: Poured a brown with reddish hint, head was thin bubbly beige. Aroma is dark malts and slight veggie. Taste is sweet malty with hints of chocolate/toffee, just enough lively hops.

Bottle: Pours a chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Nose is lighty sweet; malts, toffee, and faint dark fruits. Tastes on the sweet malty side, akin to what I remember from the other Bayern doppelbock. Toffee, brown sugar, dark fruits, and toasted malts. Not bad at all. Pretty cool to see a tribute to the Bakken (currently employed right in the middle of it), but a little bummed it probably won’t be distributed to North Dakota... --- Beer merged from original tick of Doppelbock on 04 Nov 2009 at 16:47 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7. Original review text: At Bayern: Dark brown with a creamy beige head. Whispy lacing. Sweet aroma, rather inticing. Taste is deep with molasses and sweetness. Some caramel. Lightly bitter, but finishes with a deep maltiness and very little roast. Good. **Unfiltered verision was similar, tasted side-by-side, but was a little sweeter and showed more of a toffee and molasses thing in the tail. Final rating is an average of the two.

12oz bottle pours an impressive deep ruby red with mahogany hues and quarter inch tan head. The aroma blooms with caramel candy, dates, prunes and winter spiced cookies. Cool. The taste is similar as caramel mixes with blueberry jam, prune notes and a bit of dates along with some winter spiciness along the edges. This has a nice rich flavor that I’m rather enjoying.

Bottle. Poured dark red brown with medium beige head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel and a bit of grass. Sweetish flavour with a bit of bitterness to keep it from being cloying. A bit of spice in the flavour, but not much. A little citrus in the finish, but again not a lot. Doesn’t taste as strong as it is.

Bottle poures a deep dark redish brown witha dissapointing thin fizzy head that quickly dissipates. Light roasted carmel and chocolate malt aroma. Slightly spicy light roasted flavor. Woody, a bit sweet and a little cinnamon. Thin and quite soft carbonation. Nice tasting but unsatifying somehow.
