An American Pale Lager, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve blends Henry’s German heritage with the natural ingredients of the Pacific Northwest. If you want to impress your friends, you can say it’s brewed with 100% Cascade hops specially grown in Oregon. But all you really need to know is that it’s crisp, clean and one helluva beer.

Aroma of very light malt. No noticeable hop. Brassy gold color with a frothy white head. Thinnish body. Starts with light sweet malt, moderate carbonation, and some hint of pilsener type hop in the finish. It actually has a little bitterness that stays. Not outstanding, but better than the mass produced swill. Much better.

Not much aroma. I smelled pale malt and something else, perhaps grass. Very smooth thin body. Very bubbly with some quenching capability but just drops off the table with no finish. It’s better than Miller, Budweiser or Pabst, but not that much. If you must choose between the macro-swills and this, choose this, but there are plenty of good pale lagers out there.

Bottle; Picked up two cheap beers I could rate and get to rating 500 tonight! Only drank a couple of ounces; I used to drink this once in a while to cool off. of course then it was brewed by Blitz-Weinhard; nose of grain; gold with a white head; more malty flavor than the MGD I just rated; even a little hops detectable in the finish.

For $4.75 a six pack, may be the best beer for the dollar at the local grocery store. Medium bodied and you can actually taste some malts and hops in this pale lager. Its no hero, but better than a Bud or Coors, thats for sure.

For a mainstream lager it's not that bad, really. In fact, the general (former) quality of this beer I think laid the groundwork for the palates of Portland to embrace quality beer in the way that they do.
