Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Very perfumy hop aroma. Rich body, biscuity and caramellish sweet but totally dominated by these perfumy hops - perfumy rather than citrusy. Warming alcohol finish. 250113

Bottle. Pours with a lightly hazy golden hued body with a small white head. Aromas are hoppy, grassy, tea, medium alcohol, bready malt, citrusy and slightly herbal. Flavors might be a bit faded, but there is some slightly sweet malt, lightly grassy and lemony hop character. Slightly herbal. A bit to sweet, medium bodied.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours hazy yellow-orange with a medium cream-colored head with good retention. Aroma is piney, doughy bread, floral, lemon rind. Taste starts out sweet and savory and a little sour before becoming bitter. Grapefruity. Highly carbonated and a creamy mouthfeel. I can’t remember ever having an impy IPA with this much of an umami presence. It seems like a cross between an American Imperial IPA and something like Fuller’s ESB. Really good.

Tap at the Cask, Pimlico - 25/09/12. Slightly hazy orange with a thin off white head. Big tropical fruit nose, pine forward, caramel malts and a tones of gas. Taste follows with mango, sweet grapefruit, papaya at the fore allied to pine and hops. Full bodied with moderate carbonation leading to a bitter finish. Excellent fayre!

75cl bottle from GBBF and drunk at home. Quite expensive I think like in the £14 a bottle area. Hazy orange gold colour with thick white head. Ended up having to decant it into 3 glasses to get rid of some of the carbonation. Lots and lots of floral hops and grapefruit jump out of the glass at you. Getting the carbonation out really helps let more of the flavour come through. It’s smooth and light and agile. Some booze is there, but it’s not overly sweet. Goes really well with Pont l’Eveque cheese from Normandy. Sharp tangerine flavours. Good bitterness on finish. I think it is a pretty good beer. Bit too much booze maybe. I do like the fruit and the hops though. Yep, the hops are really quite awesome.
