Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond - a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance. Brewed with English malts and American hops, Pond Hopper brings together the best ingredients each country has to offer, balancing a subtle sweet malt character with hints of mango and peach hop flavor. It pours a rich golden color with citrus and ripe melon essence in the nose. No matter which side of the pond you’re on, here’s to good beer and good friends. Cheers.

Pours a golden-orange-copper with good sized head. Aroma of hops and malt. Flavor is very rich combination of citrus-hop flavors and underlying maltiness. Very good double IPA.

750 c&c from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours hazy light orange with a creamy white head. Aroma is floral and fruity. Med + body. Flavor is very light roast malt with a great deal of floral, tropical perfume fruit, and some citrus. It’s extremely hoppy, dry and bitter, but not harshly bitter. Still there’s a bit of hop burn on tongue edges. Don’t think heat is detectable. Bordering on too perfume/ripe fruit, but still good. Very flavorful.

750ml C&C bottle from discount liquors
Appearance: Pours hazy golden with a medium sized off-white head and some lacing
Aroma: Dusty caramel and pine
Taste: Dusty caramel, grapefruit, piney (green hops) with a dry/sweet finish
It was OK but hard to finish. Sweet and hoppy, not really balanced.

Keg at CPK, London. Pours clear, shiney gold with a moderate, creamy off-white head. Massive resinous, ripe citrus nose with grapefruit and tangerine. hugely sweet flavor with lots of jammy citrus, marmalade, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, melon, canteloupe, light pine and pale, bready malts. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Good body, though, and not too heavy. Mild warmth to finish, with some slightly earhtier and grassier hops now, along with some very lightly toasted pale malts, ripe citrus, mild alcohol, orange, tangerine, pineapple, some light straw. Super sweet fruit character overall. Nice. It isn’t overly sweet or aggressively bitter. Pretty solid DIPA.

10 oz goblet draft at Martin City Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is an orange copper, lightly hazed, with a small white head. The aroma is citrus tropical (peach, mango, papaya) hops, caramel malt, nice aroma, just somewhat faint. The taste is sharp citrus peach orange hop, balanced with caramel, tea flavor crystal malt along with a touch of alcohol heat in the back. The flavor lingers with some soft dirtiness, then dries out with some light alcohol heat. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and the heat in finish picks up as it warms. I really like both these breweries, fun to try a collaboration.

Cask Pub & Kitchen
Very light haze on this gold beer, tidy white head. Smooth palate, a little viscous with mild fine carbonation. Smooth creamy malt. Nice tropical fruits, zingy mango and orange with traces of lemon, pineapple and others. Mild aniseed. Finishes sweet with more lovely fruit and some bitterness kicking in. Smooth and tasty beer - good stuff!

Keg at White Horse. It pours deep orange-amber, with a thin white head. The nose is orange, mango, oily hope, juicy fruit and jam. The taste is orange, marmalade, oily hop, Irn Bru, leaf, tanginess, jam, hay and lingering alcohol warmth, with a tangy, bitter finish,. Medium body, prickly carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel as it warms up. Good balance and flavour. Nice.
