Morello Cherry & Peruvian Coffee imperial Porter.

After inviting Sam and Antony of Other Half, New York, for a brew day during Hop City it would have been easy to dive straight into planning an IPA, given they're amongst the world leaders in this area. But you'll be hard pushed to find any trace of hops in what we created.
We've taken the best of our first Patrons series with Tom Joy and put together an almighty 10% Imperial Porter. The grist prominently features Chocolate malt, with some Roasted Barley underneath for a hint of toastiness. Four variants of crystal malt contribute toffee, liquorice and plum. Our coffee of choice from North Star Roasters was a Peruvian Nehemias Flores - Big and bold with notes of milk chocolate, sweet cherry and peach. As per previous, we looked to accentuate these flavours which meant Lactose to enhance the flavours of the chocolate malt and 500kg of Morello Cherries in conditioning for three weeks post-fermentation.

Can shared at LKS. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich, sweet, juicy, tobacco, rocky road, toasted marshmallow, cherry, tobacco, earth roast, decent hit of coffee, salted caramel and ash. The taste is rich roasted malt, charred wood, earthy roast, wet coffee grounds, charred wood, tobacco, drying, mild astringency, tar and toast with a drying finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. Pretty decent gear, a bit earthy though.

Can shared in London - thanks to Paul. Pours mostly clear, black-brown with a creamy, tan head. Strong coffee aroma, some big roast, dark chocolate. Medium to big sweet sweet flavour with moderate ashy roast, some raisins, bittersweet baking cocoa, burnt wood, espresso. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes with light warmth, more rich coffee, sturdy roast, bitter dark chocolate. Great stuff. Good depth.

Can, picked up at the brewery. Nearly black. Creamy, dense, super sticky, pale tan head. Nose has earthy coffee grinds. Some smoke. Some wood ash. Hint of dark cherry. Taste is earthy, ashy, coffee grind bitter. Light sweetness on the lips. Drying mouthfeel. Could be richer, for me. Roast coffee bean bitterness to finish. Decent, but the morello cherry is a bit lost, and overall feels a little thin.

Can. Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth, semi dry and has decent fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, a little dy dark chocolate. Mellow coffee. Cherry well buried, ripe and juicy though and quite cake like. Light dry finish. Hides the abv well and it’s smooth but it’s not giving me any wow factor.
