The brewmasters were excited about a new hop called Smaragd – the German word for Emerald – that had the spiciness of a classic noble hop combined with copious fruit character. A touch of spicy rye would be the perfect complement to this hop, they decided. And true to Schell’s tradition, the new brew would be a lager.

Bottle at Deano’s monthly tasting, September. Poured a clear chesnut brown with a thin off white head. The aroma is malty. The flavour is medium bitter with a truly awful bitter finish. One to avoid.

Bottle @ Tasting. Clear amber color, small white head. Smell malts and grains. Taste malts, rye and grains and a bit yeasty. Average body and carbonation. Hmm average at best.

Loose bottle at HyVee. Interesting light brown color, kicks up a big foamy head, but maybe my glass had some dust in it. Smell is low on malts, with just a hint of spice, and the hops seem subdued so far. Tasting, though, really offers a hit on my tongue. First I think it’s from having a lot of rye, but it seems most of this is from the hop. Bitterness is more from pungency, or like holding a wet hop cone in one’s teeth. Acidic, and maybe not ideal for most beer drinkers. But for hop lovers who want to try a different hop, this is an eye-opener. Malt leaves a lot of stickiness on my lips. Hop at finish offers a sprig of mint.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear very deep amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of rye and sweet grains with a bit of light fruits. Flavor is very similar with rye and sweet grains throughout with just a hint of light fruits in the finish.

12oz bottle. Amber-orange body, filtered. Creamy, steady off-white head. Sweetish malt aroma, not bad. Medium bodied, pretty easy going macro Rye beer. A pretty enjoyable hoppy Lager, something you don’t get too much, and even if Schell doesn’t really nail it with quality ingredients, they can brew well enough to execute something like this. Smooth caramel, rye malts malt, steady respectable hop bitterness, well balanced.

Very much like Summit’s EPA in the flavor. Brown. Thin palate, and a considerable hop profile, much more than I expected. Just a little grain sweetness in the aftertaste, but this is a dry beer, and not one of Schell’s better products.
