Wild ale aged in Danish cherry wine barrels refermented with Danish Stevnsbær cherry juice!

Moderne Dansk was inspired by one of our favorite wineries in the world -- Frederiksdal Kirsebærvin in Harpelunde, Denmark. Frederiksdal specializes in making beautiful wines from Danish Stevnsbær cherries. We've been lucky to carry their wines in our tasting room and call them friends for several years. Their wines are a house-favorite here at Jester King.

We are grateful to have procured oak barrels previously containing their wine, as well as juice from Stevnsbær cherries. We brewed beer with well water, local grain, and a blend of fresh and aged hops, and fermented it with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria. We then aged the beer in cherry wine barrels for about a year before refermenting it with Stevnsbær cherry juice. It was then naturally refermented in bottles and kegs.

We believe Moderne Dansk is a beautiful melding of the terroir from Frederiksdal and Jester King. We're excited for you to experience it!

On tap at Bottleworks, pours an opaque dark mahogany brown with a small beige head. Aroma has plenty of tart cherry pie, some wild bugs, and gentle oak. Flavour has plenty of fluffy, tart cherry pie, and some bugginess. Very fluffy palate, but great cherry character despite a lack of depth. Good.

8oz standard pour at the source. Lots of flies today! Opaque, dark cherry color with a silky thin, pink head. Pith, vinous, cherry pie spice, minerally nose. Cherry puree, fresh citrus acid, punchy, bittersweet-ness, drying pith, super oaky & rounded. Medium-high acid, middling tartness. A bit thick with solid fizzy carb. Good. Probably better if I didn't have to rush it while fighting off flies.

6/10/2023. Tap at Væskebalancen Bar, Aarhus. Like recent raters this is the 5.5% Blend 4 version. Pours a beautiful deep cherry red with a small pinkish white head. Aroma is boozed black cherries, a little musty, woody and funky, cherry chocolate liquors, straw, with occasional whiffs of stable. Medium sweetness and light to moderate tartness. Moderate body, average carbonation. Drying tart finish. Just kept getting better. Very good.

A deep dark burgundy red ale with a thin lacing mauve head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with light funk, dark fruits, cherries, grapes, light Brett, very nice. In mouth, a nice tart mix of ground cherry, grapes, light Brett, light lactic notes, very nice. On tap at brewery.

Bottle shared, care of Chris. Thanks Chris! Pours a deep ruby hue with a finger of rose-pinkish foam that lingers. Funk, hay, horseblanket aromas with cherry stone, skin and fruit notes. Great depth and good minerality on the palate with loads of whole fruit cherry notes. Drying finish but nice cherry fruit and stone flavors and come out as it warms. Great stuff.
