Back in the day England had expanded its territory, even to India. To supply our troops with ale we added extra malt and even more hops to conserve the ale for the long journey ahead. A new ale was born: India Pale Ale (IPA). The ships to India were protected by sea lions. Our Sea Lion’s IPA is special and different from our other ales; it is a strong ale! Real English, nice and bitter.

Bottle at home, take out at the bar for €5+. Crazy price for a take out bottle of ’homebrew’. Hazy pale brownish amber with white head. Sweet caramel malts, dry barley malt, non fermented wort and added sugar, light fruity dank wet hops, bitter tea leaf. Moderate sweet and over moderate bitter. Medium body, low carbonation. Dry in the finish. Weak watery bitter ale with a serious ’my first homebrew ipa’ quality issue. Poorly filled bottle (barely up till the neck) with huge chunks of yeast. It’s amazing this sells. Feed it to the tourists, I guess... //// After-Whiskey Festival biertje bij The Fiddler: Not the kind of IPA you’re hoping for. Cask at the Fiddler brewpub, Den Haag. Clear gold beer with a few white bubbles. Palate is light and semi dry, modest fine carbonation. Modest floral bitterness over a touch of malt sweetness. Very mild citrus. Clean beer but it is quite impressive how little flavour can be extruded from a 6.2% IPA!!

Cask at the Fiddler, Den Hague, 26/09/15. Clear golden blonde with a limited head. Nose is pale malt, light citric peel, orange, faint hops, bread dough. Taste comprises much the same, muted caramel and a citric tinged straw linger. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Pedestrian for the style and nothing I’d return to but the second highest rate for me of the seven house biers on offer .... @not saying much !

Cask taster @ The Fiddler Brewpub. Part of their Beer Flight. Shot glass sized. Golden, zero head. Vegetable, lemon & light citrus peel nose. Taste buttery & oily, lemon, soda, fizzy, oily hops. Oily, buttery body & carbonation like soda that has been left open, buttery & not what it should be just like 6 out of 7 beers that I tried by them.

Tap @ Fiddler, large sample. Hazy yellow color, short frothy head. Aroma of citrus, bit grainy malt, slight pineapple. Soft bitter in taste. Quite soft in overall flavor, easy going. Ok-ish.

(Cask at The Fiddler, Den Haag, 21 Aug 2014) Golden amber colour with foamy off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with citrus, orange peel, apricots, biscuity malt and floral hops. Malty, fruity taste with notes of biscuits, citrus, orange peel, apricots and a slightly resinous citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with balanced sweetness and a generous bitterness. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
