Proprietor’s Bourbon County Brand Stout is meant to show our immense gratitude to our neighbors here in Chicago – the loyal and adventurous fans whose support helped bring Bourbon County Brand Stout to towering new heights. Each year this release will differ from the previous year; a special variant created for Chicago and unique to the year it was released. Whether your first sip is today or was from that first batch in 1992, thank you for lifting us up on your big shoulders and joining us every year to celebrate the original bourbon barrel aged stout.
This year’s Proprietor’s explores the broad spectrum of chocolate. Using a combination of dark chocolate and two types of cocoa nibs, this rich and decadent beer highlights the whole range of chocolate from smooth and silky milk chocolate flavors to deep and earthy dark chocolate.

Bottled Oct 9, 2018, drunk 12/18/2023. Chocolate-mahogany. No head. That's a lot of chocolate for five years! Bourbon is light, noticeable, but could be stronger. Very malty, earthy, with heavy heavy chocolate. No booze. Sweet, chocolatey, malty, earthy, tons of cocoa nibs with earth and rich bourbon. Rich, sweet, with milk chocolate and earthy cacao. I mean, it does what it sets out to do. I think a good deal more bourbon would really have helped balance all this chocolate.

Bottle at Goose Island Taproom, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is loaded with intense cocoa nibs, chocolate, and big bourbon barrels. Flavour brings out a dense, deep amount of dark chocolate and bourbon barrels. Rich, integrated and elegant. Time has not done this any harm. Lovely.

Bottle, 500 ml shared with Max, Miro B and Zec at my 10k tasting. Black with beige head. Lots of chocolate, cocoa, nice bourbon notes, warming. Medium sweetness. Some bitterness. Low carbonation. Medium to full bodied.

Black colour, the brown head is short lived. Weird aroma, it's a bit cheesy, footy; alcohol, dark malt, light leather, bourbon. Sweet, good body strength, liquid chocolate, with clear alcohol presence, bourbon, roasted nuts, some vanilla, bigger roast in the finish.
Not very refined, but still good.

500ml (thx a lot, Peter K.!) shared with Alex at Andrey's. Appearance: very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma: very sweet, vanilla, fruity, some bourbon. Taste: along the same lines, quite thick, vanilla beans, very sweet, some booze. Overall: of course, it's a very good one, however, I expected more based on the description and after I've just had the Reserve 2018 that is a straight BBA IS and was more thick than this one.

Yes, chocolate. Super rich and smooth, sweet but not too much, and lots of chocolatey goodness. Plenty bourbon, dangerously drinkable. They wanted chocolate, they got it for sure. Very intense, a true dessert beer.
