This robust dark brew has been created in conjunction with Crescent Moon to coffee to come up with a special five bean blend to bring out the depth of the beer. Originally produced to celebrate our 10th anniversary, this has now become our late-winter seasonal. Note the aromas of toffee, licorice and coffee roastiness. Then take a sip–there’s a malty richness on the palate followed by chocolate, coffee, spices and perhaps even some licorice character from the Mount Rainier hops. The beer finishes with a subtle black cherry/berry character from rare Ethiopian Sidamo beans. Oh yeah, it also packs a royal kick at 8% alcohol.

Coffee: Blend of five Estate coffees locally roasted

Malts: Two Row Pale, Munich, Chocolate, Medium Crystal and Cara Malts.

Hops: Magnum and Mount Rainier

Yeast: English Ale

Original Gravity: 18 Plato

Opaque dark brown beer, not much of a head. Light coffee on the nose. Light palate, a tad dry. Mild mild espresso with light dark malts. Mild minerals. Everything seems pretty light for an Imperial beer at 8.2% but quite quaffable!

Bottle courtesy of Stephen on 06/28/2010. I wrote down "Flying Dog Imperial Espresso Stout" but I think this is the right one. Clear dark brown body with a small tan had. Sweet roast and coffee aroma. Big coffee flavor with some roast and chocolate. Medium body with low carbonation.

12oz bottle from footbalm, thanks!
Appearance: Black, almost opaque with a creamy light tan head that dissipates quickly
Aroma: Coffee, roasted malts and chocolate
Taste: Roasted malts and coffee. Leaves a light medicinal taste on the tongue
Silky mouthfeel, the 8% alcohol doesn’t come through.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Alraomon. Thanks! Pours a dark ruby tinted brown color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma is very bitter and lightly sweet espresso with light chocolate notes. Taste is chocolate, bitter coffee and a light fruity finish. Medium-full bodied with strong carbonation.

Bottle, bonus from Ty5592, drunk on 10/3/07, aged some 4-5 months.
Very lovely appearance, looks like Flying Fish went all out on this one, with sediment at the bottom and what looks like a bottle conditioned, rich, dense, lasting tan head atop a mostly clear, maroon-mahogany tinted dark brown body. Moderate lacing as well.
Sweet coffeecake-like notes arise in the aroma, with a shy amount of dryness/tartness from the dark malts peeking through the finish. A fair amount of residual sugars are brought to the nose, with the strong, tight carbonation, and cookie-dough vanilla mixes with the choco-coffeebean flavors to linger long on the finish. Clean yeast with low fruitiness and seemingly no flaws. As it warms, the coffee flavor softens, and the beer gets fudgey-sweet in the nose. Banana esters and some glue-like vapors emerge, unpleasantly, though the dry coffee still commands some authority. Medium-high strength of aroma.
Terrific amounts of succulent chocolate-fudge and vanilla-caramel maltiness give the impression of a full body, as creamy, tight carbonation helps intensify this character as well. Minimal scratchiness from the dark malts, and a very flavorful coffee create a highly drinkable beer, that still manages appropriate attenuation, for all the maltiness. Went down very fast, I must admit, with just a marvelous texture. Warming found the malts grow slightly too sweet/tacky and allowed some odd esters/phenols to emerge, just as in the aroma, but I was just about done with my glass by that time. Some dark malt/coffee astringency builds up on the finish. Alcohol not noted.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Storm. Pours a clear, reddish brown with a beige head. Sweetish, roasted malt aroma - some vanilla also. Medium body with sweetish, roasted malt, lightly burned with some cola notes and a dry, burned bitterness from the malt. 310807

Dark mahogany color. A beer based on (sweet) caramel, with a respectable body and (IMO) not much bitterness, also some roastedmalt; but lack of complexity and interest.

Bottle from JB175; Nose of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla; clear walnut color with a medium tan head; flavor of coffee, cherries, and chocolate from the medium thin body, with a light but bitter hop finish. Thin but more complex than some porters.

Bottle, at csbosox KC tasting 4/14. Pour is brown, with highlights of amber. Aroma is fairly tame, though it bit of the espresso comes through. Taste is roasted malt, and a but hot (alcohol). I was expecting bigger espresso profile to this one, though I preferred it as it was.
