Exit 6 starts out as a deceptively simple recipe–pale malt augmented by 20 percent rye, fermented with a classic Belgian yeast. But then it gets interesting with the hops: English East Kent Goldings, Slovenian Styrian Goldings and Japanese Sorachi Ace. The result is a rich saffron color with a spicy character from the rye and lemony citrus notes from the unique Sorachi Ace hops.

At the FF Crafthouse: pours amber with a white head. Aroma is light fruitiness and spice. Taste is a sort of metallic fruitiness. Light spicy. Kind of sweet. Pretty good.

The Belgian yeast overpowers the rye. Really good.

750 mL bottle from Ye Old Spirit Shop, Frederick, MD. A bit of a gusher, but not too bad. Pours a hazy pale yellow with floating particles. Large frothy tan head fades quickly. Aroma of big citrus and tropical hops with a bit of rye. The taste is stone fruits, tropical fruits, fruit cocktail, fruit roll-ups and a bit of a rye bite. Medium bodied. Weird but not bad.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of Belgian-style malt with notes of rye with balanced sweetness. Taste is also a mix between a solid Belgian-style malt bill with balanced sweetness level and some notes of rye with a somewhat dry finish. Spicy yeast strain is well balanced into the mix. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting take on Belgian ale with nice rye notes.

Walloonian Rye bottle thanks to Blutt59. Pours with a hazed golden body and a white head. Aromas of apple, rye, spicy, grainy and bread. Flavors are fruity, spicy hops, unfermented wort notes, herbal and malty. Lively bubbles.

Hazy golden coloured body with a largeish, fast-dying white head. Tons of bubbles rise from the bottom and sides nicely. Aroma of pungent wheat, rye, yeast, alcohol and quite a bit of light spices - nice! Medium-bodied; Very effervescent feel. Mild yeastie and wheatie flavour like a belgie trip, with a curacao and coriander seed freshness after a second or two. Aftertaste shows some lingering honey, yeast, spices and a hint of rye dryness, but fairly sweet and pleasant. Overall, a very nice beer, organized well into this style of beer. I’d recommend this to others if you can find it, and I do really like this series of beers - even though they are mostly in 75 cL bottles! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 10-October-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 11-November-2010.

750ml bottle pours a translucent, hazy, orange with a thin, creamy white head. Nose is nice, spicy, both in terms of the yeast esters and the malts used, sweet, sugary, a little tropical fruit. Flavor is nice, the rye comes through in a chewy malt character, Belgian candy sugar is also there, a little herbal, some light clove. Medium bodied with some lasting sweetness. I thought the rye separated this from a lot of other Belgian ales.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Shop Rite - Hoboken, 9/13/10
Aroma: The nose is doughy, some spice, Belgian yeast, fruit (orange/peach), and of course, rye
Appearance: This one pours a mostly clear golden-orange color with a small white head
Flavor: It has a relatively complex flavor profile: there is some sweetness from the fruits along with the spice from the Belgian yeast, clove, some doughy flavors, crackers, bread, rye, and some floral hops
Palate: It has a medium body, average to lively carbonation, and somewhat oily feel on the mouth
Overall Impression: I like this beer. It has a pretty nice complexity of flavor, and all of the flavors seem to work pretty well together. As I am now a NJ resident, I'm excited to try well-made new beers from this state, and this is one. I look forward to getting a hold of the future beers from the Exit series, and perhaps locating one of the 2 I haven't gotten a chance to try yet. Very nice offering from Flying Fish.
