1996 vintage courtesy of jcwattsrugger, thanks John. It pours clear copper with micro thin sort of white head. The aroma is musty oaky malts, stale vinegar and somewhat sort of stale yeasty tartness. The taste is watery smooth subtleness where timid bits of tartness, somewhat soured citrus and salty sweetness sort of swim around together in a watery sort of “berry” dance. Did I mention "sort of"?

1996 Vintage. Pours a clear reddish brown. Nose is sour fruit and fermentation. Taste is lightly sour fruit, malt, sheet metal and dry ashy finish. A little past its prime.

1996 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Sadly this one is...well...way over the hill. Pours with a small white head that fades over a hazy golden body. Aroma of cork, cobwebs, dirt and attic. Taste is completely gone. Lactic, caddy, vinegar, acrid, sour, spoiled, oxidized and greatly unpleasant. Light bubbles and a thin mouthfeel.

Personal "New Years Night of 1000 Gueuzes" continued with this non-gueuze but I was throwing it in for sh*ts and giggles, fit in very well actually. This was actually the last beer of the night, only so much sour beer I could drink by myself. 1996 750mL capped bottle. Looks very much like the other gueuzes, with an orange stained golden color, rather clear as well. Aroma is super strong on cork/oak and wet wood. It is also very lively and has a sour/wild feel or flair. Taste is very leathery with light vinegar and again a lively, easy drinking feel. would never guess its this old and it must be some wild bugs that are keeping it alive so long.

Also purchased at Blue Max. Very much a saison. Sour and lots of barnyard funk to this beer. Red, light carbonation. Aroma has some horseblanket and lemon as well. Besides the sourness, flavor oddly reminds me of udon noodles; but this is a very minor aspect of the beer.

750mL, bottled in 1996, provided by and shared with Muzzlehatch on 5/20/2005. I’d been dying to try this, he must have read my mind, what a guy, thanks!
Amber-orange-copper, some bright, deep reddish tints. Small white head, recedes to ring. Unfiltered and unpasteruised, you know the drill. Smells tart and has notes of cider vinegar. Lots of old, musty yeast is quite acidic. Notes of white pepper, sour bacterias and some sugar. Aroma is typical of such an old bottle and is not indicative of the flavor to come. First sip. . .wow! this is tart stuff! It’s like a dark strong gueuze (sort of). Well, it’s immensely tart AND sour. Lots of rich, oily leather tannins, plant roots (not that I’m an expert on those). My notes use the word "sour" about eight times. Lightly sugary maltiness. Vinous on the end, some brett-like notes. Despite being oxidized and having some thinning, it still has a wonderful amount of malt that provides for a medium to medium-full body. Low carbonation, tingly/effervescent mouthfeel. Must get more!!! Love this brewery (send help, I’m addicted to oxidation).
Rerate. Another bottle from the same vintage sampled in July 2004 proves to be a bit too muddled with yeast, protein, madeiraisation. But the worst part was a very strong metallic character on the finish that was quite out of character.

This beer hasn't shocked me in subsequent tastings quite the way it did at first. Opaque tan colour; corky sourish aroma. Thinnish mouthfeel, quick and refreshing. Not usually as sour nor as spicy as my first sample.
Previous rating: An intense acidic sharpness, a smooth and vibrant body, touch of herbal spices, and a perilous drinkability. Ar 9, Ap 4, F 10, P 5, O 19
