Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Zeus IPA is brewed with only Zeus hops from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Zeus Hops contribute bitterness and an intense, pungent resinous pine flavor. This brew leans strongly toward the hop character, but is softened by the malt’s sweetness.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is orange, pine, and herbs. Taste is pretty bitter. Significant amount of resin and pine are there. Lingering aftertaste. Pretty good.

Draught at BevX360, Bellingham
Hazy dark amber color with creamy head. Dry, caramelly, with vegetable notes, some hop resins, but not much hop quality. Not convincing.

Bottle, from Deconstructed 12 pack. Pours a deep amber color with a nice, thick, off white head. Good retention and lacing. Aromas of piney, grassy hops & lemon stand out. Taste is earthy, piney, resinous, and lemony with some sweet malt. Medium bodied with a dry, bitter finish.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 10/2014. Pours crystal clear orange amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate malt balance; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is very good IPA. Good complexity of citrus/pine hops and moderate malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle from a Wegman’s in Buffalo, NY. #5 in the series. A golden amber pour with a tight cream head; resinous piney aroma; soft gnetly bitter taste, without the hradhness of some West Coast hops; and a satisfying leafy hop finish with a touch of spice. Rather understated and very easy to drink.

Bright clear amber beer. Big fluffy off white head. Crisp palate, turning softer. A little creamy malt. Interesting hop - sweet and earthy with hard to pin down fruits but including grapefruit, orange, peach and apricot. Finishes dry with mild bitterness. Nice interesting IPA.

Once again, I let these sit in my fridge since last July, expecting to do a grand YouTube comparison of all 6 at a time. It wasn’t to be. So I’ll strain myself into just doing two at a time. Tonight its Zeus and Hallertau. Poured straight into my Sam Adams glass, the Zeus has a notably more orangey head, a little less robust than the Hallertau. Same light copper malt color. Taste still brings on the pine resin and hop-leafy bitterness; this seems to have held out the best, so far, of my aged stash. All these beers have shown a nice, rich malt profile that tilts them toward an American Pale Ale, no matter which hops are used. This has been a fun experiment, and since Sam doesn’t have a regular IPA in its line-up, you can try these with no baseline to check them against. Except for the original Lat. 48°.

Bottle. Amber body with orange highlights. Fizzy, off-white head. Strong plant aroma of leafy hops. Notes of earth, caramel, toasted grain, resin, pines, flowers. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter, a bitterness that lasts long into the finish. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Tastes of grapefruit skin, citrus, orange and pine. Aggressive hops with strong raw-hop aroma and taste make this rendition less clean than the others (except for the Simcoe). Not my favorite.
