Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Zeus IPA is brewed with only Zeus hops from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Zeus Hops contribute bitterness and an intense, pungent resinous pine flavor. This brew leans strongly toward the hop character, but is softened by the malt’s sweetness.

Part of the deconstructed 12 pack. Pours a deep amber color with a frothy white head that sticks around for a bit before impaling itself to the sides of the glass. Smells of grapefruit and earthy hops countered by a weird caramel toffee sweetness that seems to permeate through each version. Sweet, floral and fruity mixed with hints of bread and caramel. Taste is sweet toffee and bready with citrus grass and pine. Fairly dry finish with lingering bitter sweetness. I know that sounds weird. Sweet bubbly mouthfeel with a medium body and level of carbonation. I like this one, but I think as a whole Latitude 48 is not my favorite IPA by a long shot. Its an interesting experiment, so far this one has been my favorite.

Clear light copper with a white head. Aroma is full of pine, chewy caramel malt, grapefruit. Medium body with biting carbonation. Pine, hop resin, a bunch of caramel malt though not overly sweet. Full of flavor and quite interesting. Not my favorite of the bunch, though.

Vertical tasting of all six beers in the Sam Adams Latitude 48 Deconstructed variety pack. 12 oz bottle into shaker. All pour clear copper with medium sized heads. Zeus’ head collapses pretty quick, leaving a thin blanket and decent lace. Aroma is kind of skunky, caramel, rubber--weird. Taste is bittersweet with the bitterness dominating. Carbonation and body are medium and the mouthfeel is creamy. This is probably fourth best of the bunch.

12oz bottle into a Sam Adams glass. Orange-brown, filtered. Big frothy head. Bold fruity hop tones, but coupled with the Sam Adams yeast strain and the biscuity malt, come off very British. Mellow tropical fruit tones, but nor much bite. Very balancing, while still flavorful, seems an ideal hop for an APA. A little boring, but still well done.

Latitude 48 IPA mixed pack. Poured a golden, almost copper color with a medium but a fast reducing head. This one has a slightly zesty hop aroma to it, pine notes. Flavor is a bit more biting, pine, relatively refreshing. Clean on the palate, a bit rough around the edges, but certainly a worthy beer, even on its own.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright red-orange color with a medium sized foamy tan had. The aroma was sweet pine, grapefruit, resin and caramel. The flavor was dryish and tangy with notes of pine, resin, lemon, spruce and a touch of caramel. The finish was long, dry, piney and citric. Medium body.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with an off white head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces nicely. Aroma has a strong pine note with a good amount of resin and a hint of a spicy garlic note. Flavor starts with a strong pine note that lasts throughout the beer with really not much else to speak of.
