A few times a year we cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again.

Our 2012 Barley Wine bridges continents of style, a harmonious creation of Diploma Master Brewer Daniel Carey. He personally chose the hop fields that were harvested for this powerful beast of a brew. Styrian Golding, Willamette, Columbia, and Sterling with bold citrus and resin notes. All perfectly balanced with toasty graham cracker flavors of floor malted barley. Savor this very big beer at 45° F and it will reward you with an open embrace.

Big thanks to GhostFace for shipping me a metric ton of this wonderful stuff. Cheers Neal!! The 12oz bottle pours clear deep gold with a thin light tan colored head. The aroma offers up apricot, apples, malt muted pine and some floral notes thinly ringing the edges. The taste delivers smooth thick sweet malts, pine hops and a good bit of floral hops midway and into the finish. Just another well crafted brew that is smooth and balance and bold and at the edge of also being aggressive all at the same time.

Bottle at the Semi-Final Tasting, my place in London. Thanks to Jack. Pours clear gold with a fine, white foam head. Sugary malts on the nose with light caramel and some faint floral notes. Big sweet flavor with sticky pine, sturdy grass, a bit of caramel, and alcohol. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish, big and sweet, with more caramel and alcohol, some ripe fruits, heavy malts. Not terrible, but it would probably improve a lot as it mellows out with age.

Bottle at Leighton’s Euro Semi-Final tasting, thanks to jackl. It pours golden yellow, with a decent white head. The nose is alcohol, sweet tangerine, sweet fruit, icing sugar and sweet malt. The taste is sweet tangerine, white sugar, alcohol warmth, butter, spice, dryness, grass and meal, with a dry, warming finish. Medium body and prickly carbonation. Unbalanced and too hot.

12 oz bottle from Arminjewell. Nose is hoppy with bits of pine and citrus, the malts seeming kind of muted with hints of toffee pineapple, after numerous sniffs the piney hops seem to dominate. Lightly hazy yellow orange with a medium yellow beige head. Flavor is lightly bitter with fruity sweet pineapple . A very different barleywine. The 12% ABV is well covered though.

Bottle: Poured a clear light amber color ale with large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of light cookie dough with some caramelized malt and some light toffee. Taste is an interesting mix between some dry caramelized malt notes with light cookie dough notes and some light toffee, the whole mix is note as sweet as I was expecting. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed with great level of complexity.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a snifter. Pours clear amber with very small off-white head. Very little lacing, medium body, low carbonation, and sweet booze aroma. Taste is complex sweet malt, booze, and bitter finish. Good for a barley wine, just not fan of typical booze associated with this style.

Bottle shared at the Baltimore Irish Chanukah tasting, 3/17/12. Thanks to Ghostface and pantanap for sending me bottles. Pours a clear golden color with a large creamy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of leafy, herbal, citrus hops with caramel and toffee malts. The taste is citrus hops, caramel, toffee, earth and herbal notes. Medium bodied. Very drinkable, especially for its ABV.

Bottle. Pours a clear caramel amber with a near white head dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice combination of light grass hops with some light fruits with a nice backbone of caramel and sweet grains. Flavor starts with a nice grassy hops and light fruits and finishes with a strong caramel and sweet grain note as well as a hint of bitterness.
