Bottled 22oz from decicco. Poured a dark reddish brown. Some hops and such. Spicy lighter mouth feel and more resinish than most black IPA s

Deep dark brown coloured body with a little lighter brown toward the bottom, all with a luscious and thick four centimetre tall rich brown head that leaves a pretty ugly lace. Aroma of roasted malt, yeast, alcohol, metal, grapefruit and slightly astringent hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive alcohol and metal up front with a large yeast kick, some grapefruit and piney flavours and a lot of roastiness to battle through. Aftertaste shows a defined malty and grapefruit flavour with some metal and roasty harshness on the end. Overall, almost exactly what the label says - a belgian yeast-forward black IPA, which in itself is fairly complex, and this is pretty much exactly that, but the problem is the ’style’ itself is a bit hard to define, so this one is a fault of perhaps trying too much. Not a bad offering, but not great - either a Black IPA or Belgian IPA would be better, not both. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from K&E Discount Beverage in New Paltz, New York on 14-June-2014 for US$7,99 sampled at home in Washington on 11-March-2015.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s, big thanks to fellow CDA brah LKS, 29/01/15. Note... last CDA as a Surrey resident. Light black with a decent beige covering. Nose is pine, liquorice, spice, tangy red berry, cocoa powder, biscuit. Taste comprises earthy hops, sticky toffee, spice, pine needle, red berry pangs, liquorice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close peppered with earthy hop bitterness. Solid CDA.

Tasting at Bruce’s. Almost clesr brown beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and crisp. Smooth and mellow dark malts, little malt cream. Trace of dark chocolate. Spicy piney hops with mild citrus. Light airy finish. Classic CDA profile delivered very well.

Bottle care of Leighton. It opaque dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is sweet, juicy, oily orange oil, sherbet, stewed tangerine, chocolate and Terry’s chocolate orange. The taste is crisp, bitter roast, toasty, liquorice, earth, pithy orange citrus, ashy, charred wood, chocolate and light vanilla with a smooth finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Not as " hoppy" as I expected from a black ipa, but decent anyhow.

Bottle shared in London - picked up in a trade. Pours clear brown with a frothy tan head. The nose holds some toasted pine, grapefruit, melon. Medium sweet flavor with earthy bitterness, burnt sugars, rindy orange, toasty bred. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Nicely balanced on the finish, subtle chocolate, mild earth, rindy citrus, mellow tropical fruits. Solid.

Location: 22 oz bottle from The Hop, 10/11/13

Aroma: The nose is a nice mix of resin and roast, some fruity notes, and a bit of spice
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color, with a reddish hue, small beige head, and light lace
Flavor: The taste has a medium-plus bitterness, light spice, and plenty of balancing roast
Palate: The body is medium, with a soft carbonation, smooth feel, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: This one is a pretty nice Black IPA. The components you'd want in this style are all here, and all work solidly together. It's not an absolute standout, but it is a more than solid beer.

Bomber from Half Time. Pours very dark brown/black with a 3 finger creamy tan head. Aroma is very resin. Maybe a little citrus. Full bodied. Foamy carb. Flavor is biting pine/citrus. So strong that the burnt malt backbone is overwhelmed. Right coast meets left coast. Agreement on hoppiness. This finishes quite hoppy, quite dry, and quite tasty. Excellent!!!!!
