Barley Wine Ale is a legendary top-fermented brew with a deep amber/orange color, an intense fruit and malt nose that is laced with alcohol accented by the sweet aromas of Port. This "wine" made with barley is brewed with a French yeast culture and possesses a complex flavor of rich malt, fruit esters, and sherry-like qualities that is delicately balanced with hops.

2005 bottle, gold wax cap. Nice boozy nose under the cap. Tawny brown color, very brief fizz. Nothing has gone off in 20 years, it's got a nice alcoholic nose, some fruitiness and strong malt, with no oxidation. Taste offers more of that strong abv, some fruity ale, and a, well, normal mouthfeel. Actually starts to get a little watery, but not enough to be a distraction.

Gold wax. A hazed amber barley wine with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a strange sweet sour cherry with bizarre medicinal notes. In mouth, a spoiled lactic malt with sour cherries, Hall’s drops, infected barley wine. Blahhh! Shared with GRM.

Yet another very cool brew courtesy of markwise. The funky little bottle pours out copper with gold edges and thin off white head. The aroma is full English barleywine with cherries, raisins, dates, prunes and ripe plums mixing with mild sweet sugary malts. The taste quickly takes on a blended and smooth dark fruitiness with all the usual suspects like prunes, cherries, plums, raisins and figs. I also get modest amounts of sweet malts underneath creating some added interest to the flavor. Tasty stuff.

16 oz. bottle courtesy of Ugsmush. 2006 Vintage. Pour is almost entirely clear orange-amber, with a nice looking 1/2 inch off white head. Aroma of big sweet fruitiness - pretty intense. Caramel and some leather round out the nose. Taste is more of the big fruit, though it is somewhere between raisins and juicy fruit gum, not a terribly good combination. The big fruit taste was highlighted by some pretty sharp heat as well, though this faded pretty quickly after the beer opened up. Nice full body. This one was good, but it was a bit less refined than most Barley Wines I have had. Regardless, nice to see Sprecher branching out. Thanks for this one Jason, I enjoyed it!
