On tap at Jack's Abby, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a reddish tinge and a small beige head. Aroma brings out fresh Szechuan peppercorns, with little else discernible. Flavour follows through, with the peppers stealing the show, along with a touch of bourbon and very subdued smoke. A bit jumbled and I'm not totally convinced by the usage of chili peppers. Not bad.

Draught at the brewery, 4/23/16.
Dark ebony with lighter dark mahogany edges and a charred grey head that is well-retained. Clarity is moderate.
Light ash, light tobacco and bits and pieces of honey-caramel soaked bread. Vanilla lingering with just a hint of spicy pepper. Almost a light cola/hazelnut character on the finish. Loads of chalk ad fresh yeast really steal the show here.
I just love the new Smoke and Dagger. Absolutely free from the heavy breadiness and roasted barley bitterness of the original version. In its place a lightly ashy, strongly chalky and caramel-milk-chocolate-sweet maltiness. Add to this light bakers chocolate-like dryness and a softly warming pepper spiciness and it’s definitely gained from the peppers, I think. Barrel-aged? If it is, it’s only just mellowed and congealed the flavors perfectly as there’s no harsh tannin or overly oaky/woody flavors here. Lovely stuff and shockingly drinkable given what you’d expect for a barrel aged pepper smoked beer.

Tap at the source. It pours clear deep brown with a decent beige head. The nose is earthy, sweet treacle, smoked malt, honey-glazed ham and smooth roast. The taste is bitter-sweet, peppery upfront, earthy roast, wood, spice, fruit cake and smoked meats with a dry, peppery finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Novel.

Sampled at EBF. Pours a clear cola brown with some white head. Unique aroma, birch syrup, malt, mint. Flavor of wood, tooth paste, birch, root beer, even a little ginger. Herbal finish. Neat.
