Tap at the Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell - 29/10/12. Pitch black with a thin tan head that clears to the edge. Roast malt nose, plastics, almond, dark sugars, window sealant, touch of booze - not convinced! Tastes of chocolate, roast coffee, touch of vino rouge and fruit, caramel, light sour tones. Medium heading towards fuller bodied with a bitter sweet aftertaste. Ok but the balance isn’t quite all there for me!

Old Fountain Weekend Mini Fest. Opaque black - brown beer, little pale tan head. Smooth dark malts. A little emulsion paint that you sometimes get from barrels. Nice red wine - well integrated. Finishes semi dry and semi crisp. Nice beer but the paint tone was a bit too much for it to be great.

Keg at The Old Fountain, London. Pours dark brown with a tight, lasting beige cream head. Aroma holds some burnt sugars, burnt wood, a bit of tar and rubber. Medium sweet with dry chocolate, cocoa, dark berries, burnt wood, light earth. Medium bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Some dry, dark wood to finish, vinous quality, bitter earth, dirt, cocoa, light roast. A lot of nuance, for sure.

Keg at the Evening Star, Brighton. It pours opaque, near black, with a small beige head. The nose is wood, roasted malt, coffee, leather, permanent marker pen, red grape and some jam. The taste is roasted malt, dark fruit, cherry cola, treacle, charcoal, toast, coffee grinds, tangy dark fruit and port/vinous notes, with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel. The red-wine barrel certainly leaves an impression. A tasty offering, but I prefer the base beer.

On tap at Old Fountain. Black beer. Not great condition. Too much wood some red wine. In mouth tio much wood. A lot of red wine which is good but not enough of the base beer comes through. It was an effort to drink it.
