This beer was brewed as a collaboration between Jack’s Abby and Evil Twin Brewing. This black lager blends various roasted and dark crystal malts. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, and a subtle nuttiness dominate this sweet full bodied lager. Brown malt and chocolate wheat malt were specially sourced for this beer from Valley Malt. Enjoy!

Bottle at home in CT. Pours rich, clear cola-brown with a dense, frothy beige head. Lots of toasted caramel on the nose, some simple chocolate, dark fruits. Medium sweet flavor with hearty chocolates malts, creamy caramel, burnt toast, raisins. Medium bodied with average carbonation and velvety texture. Finishes sweet but still pretty well balanced, with slight scorched earth bitterness, lots of milk chocolate, berries, raisins. Very nice beer.

Draught at Deep Ellum Winter ’13-’14
Clear ebony with lighter mahogany hues on the edges and a light beige head that is well-retained.
Toasty, not overly roasty malt notes in the nose are backed by juicy, grass-like hop notes and light citrus. Coffee notes are light but mix with the caramel to give further complexity. No alcohol or flaws.
Somewhat sweet and simple, to sum it up. Creamy-sweet vanilla and caramel are met with very light roasted notes and a touch of sourdough. Hops are minimal, adding lightly fruity bitterness (oranges, various citrus, leafy green notes). Chewy, full-bodied texture and while all this malt and body is intentional, I’d much rather have a more dry Kostritzer or the like.

16 ounce bottle poured into a tulip. Pours dark brown slightly black with almost a finger of tan head. No lacing. Aromas of roast, coffee, sweet nuts, biscuit. Tasting notes of coffee, roast, caramel, dark chocolate, a little toast/biscuit. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation, slightly creamy syrupy mouthfeel. Tasty schwarzbier.

Bottle. Pours dark black with a medium tan head that dissipates with good lacing on the glass. Aroma is shwarzbier-esque, roasty, nutty, a bit of toffee and cardboard. Flavor is roasty, a bit of coffee, cocoa and ashtray; kind of like a porter. Light sweet and light bitter. Medium body, bit of a creamy mouthfeel. Not a bad beer at all.

Bottle from Andover Liquors Pours a deep dark brown with ruby highlights and a decent sized tightly bubbled tan head that recedes rather quickly. Aromas of caramel and roasted coffee with a hint of cream and chocolate. Earthy spicy hops provide a hint of balance but confine themselves to background notes. The flavor is pretty heavy on the roast and caramel with only fleeting hints of chocolate. Earthy hop flavor keeps things from cloying. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a silky bubbly mouthfeel. Decent brew, heavy on the roast, but nice to drink.

Bottle @ Steve_0’s palace, courtesy of Stephen. Thanks! Pours a pretty clear reddish brown appearance with a brown head. Dusty, powdery herbal, kind of burnt aroma. Decent body. Some caramel and chocolate and dough. Again, it’s a bit powdery. Well balanced. Pretty easy drinking and surely better than 90% of the American made Schwarzbier but not killer.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a hazy dark brown with a near white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has lots chocolate with a bit of dark grains, nuts as well as a hint of coffee and smoke. Flavor has more sweet chocolate with a bit of roasted malts and a touch of coffee.

Draft @ Red Bones, Somerville, Ma. Dark ruby in color with blackness in the center. Coffee and roasted mats up front with has a bit of caramel and molasses in the main body. The smoky charred ash hints are also here and truly what I enjoy in this style. The roasted malt has depth. Hops have a German or European feel to it or maybe they used Munich malts, either way this is a nice example of the style. Medium in body with carbonation being really light. Overall I enjoy how Jacks Abby and Evil Twin got the authentic German feel to this beer, nice job!
