Brasserie Trois Dames India Brown Ale

India Brown Ale

Brasserie Trois Dames in Sainte-Croix, Vaud, Switzerland 🇨🇭

IPA - Black / Cascadian Dark Regular Out of Production
Score
6.67
ABV: 5.5% IBU: 50 Ticks: 28
My take on a porter with a reinforced hop character: 50 IBU for only 5.2-5.5% ABV. Almost the hop charge of an IPA, but with a solid dark, roast malt backbone, Brewed once or twice a year.

Bottle. Dark amroon color, scant large bubble edge head. Aroma of sweet chocolate covered caramel. Taste stars sweet and malty, then bitter coffee and cocoa.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of deep caramelized malt with strong earthy hops that don’t really mesh with the malt notes. Taste is also a bit off balance between some strongly caramelized malt with quite a lot of residual sugars and some earthy with light pine notes that don’t really holds against the huge malt backbone. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Weird one and not something I would seek again.

$4.49 for an 11.2 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Labeled as “ L’Exploratrice Hoppy Porter” Must be bottle fermented since there was a ton of floating years particles noticeable in the dark brown liquid. Almost no retention in the English pint glass. Nose is pine with light citrus notes. Touch of chocolate malt. Taste is similar to the nose however, much lighter. Also has a mild sourness that detracts from the flavors. Short finish with the exception of the strange sourness. Second brew I’m rating from this brewery. At this point not sure I will buy any others. No major problems just real average at best.

Bottle. Brown beer with a small cream colored head. Pine and caramel aroma. Grapefruit and pine flavor with caramel. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and tropical fruits linger with light caramel.

Bottled 330ml (BB 01/2012)
Deep ruby-brown color, small off-white head. American hoppy, sweaty-grassy aroma. Medium-bodied. Flowery, citrusy with balanced maltyness in the background. Nice crispy IPA. Black IPA only by color. Excellent beer.

Bottled (thanks Bov!). Rubyish amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is a bunch of fruity and floral hops with some spices and wooden notes. Quite resiny as well. Flavour is brutally bitter hoppy ending rather grassy and hayish. Brutal bitterness.

330ml bottle labeled as L’Exploratrice Hoppy Porter, shared by Eric, thanks
Appearance: Slightly hazy brown with a small beige head and good lacing left in the glass
Aroma: Light aroma of sour hops
Taste: Malts, sweet and old hops
Mouthfeel was thin. An ok beer, I’m not sure this is a Black IPA though. Ok 3.2

Pours like an India Brown into a shaker and less like the "Hoppy Porter" described on the label. Sickly off-white head recedes to pancake surface. Licorice and raisin aromas. Thin with front to back roasted nuts and dark pit fruits. Meh.

Bottle from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. As L’Exploratrice. Pours very dark brown/black with a sharp, foamy off-white head. Sort of a soapy aroma. Full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is dark malt with some strong citrusy hop. The flavor is strong. Mouth-grabbing. Very smooth, begging the carbonation, and finishes definitely on the dry side. Well crafted.
