The base of this beer is Ongelovige Thomas. New American white oak soaked in Kenau has been added, which makes the beer much stronger and gives it a hint of vanilla. Because the wood is soaked in Kenau, the beer is named Jopen Thomas en Kenau.
Full-bodied flavour with vanilla, whiskey, oak, some roasted hints of chocolate and plenty of fruit (blackberries and brambles) because of the American hops varieties. Dominant smooth and fruity flavour the result of the new American white oak.

Thanks bierkoning! Dark brown color, small beige head, some lace. Aroma has alcohol, toffee, more toffee, oak and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied. Mellow palate. Oak, vanilla and toffee in the sweetish flavor. Alcohol kick and quite active carbonation. Mellow dessert. Perhaps a bit too much vanilla sweetness without real edge.

Rerate: bottled from Mitra Bunnik, dated April 2012, BB April 2014, medium sample. Aroma of wine has balanced much more with the base beer, not as much high alcohols present anymore. Sweetness nicely balanced with oaky notes in taste. Upping the score to 3.9. Original rating: Bottled @ de Molen, small sample. Clear reddish brown color, short head. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, bit raisin, hint of oak, quite some high alcohols. Quite sweet in taste, slight bitter, caramel, bit spicy. A bit too much of the high alcohols produced by the yeast makes it a bit of a tough drinker. I prefer more maltiness or hoppiness instead. 3.3

Hazy deep amber beer, good pale tan head. Palate is smooth and dry. Sweet dry malt. Little spice and sweet esters - bubblegum and candy fruits. Touch of spirity something. Light semi dry finish with a mildly warming afterglow. Not bad at all.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear deep reddish brown colour, light-beige head. Aroma of hard candy, alcohol, some liquorice, spirit/jenever, oak only upon opening of the bottle. Flavour is sweet, hard candy, alcohol, quite hot/sharp, jenever or vodka, some brown sugar, bitter woody finish. Medium-bodied at best. Needs some mellowing, lacks complexity IMO, but wasn’t a fan of the base beer to begin with.

Bottle courtesy of Kermis. Poured a deep mahogany with a broken tan head. The aroma is rich but dry malt and raisins. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with lots of roasted malt, liqourice and coffee. A super beer from Jopen.
