Had the privilege of tasting this rare bottlle at the 2016 RBSG weekend, whew. Big thanks to alexsdad06 for melting my palate. Nose tells me there is lots of apparent alky in this one, but in a nice sexy way like a slightly drunk mate at the the end of a night. Alarming amber light in color. First taste? Big strong sweet almost cloying, american, needs aged, wanna bee barleywine. Yes, its got a few years on it but it needs a couple more to get that old country aged feel on it. Little oxidation considering the age. I must say tho, it has aged the rudeness out of itself. Yes, the sweetness needs just a couple more years of wisdom (& oxidation) to make it like the old country J.W. Lees Harvest Ale (Lagavulin) & O’Hanlon’s Thomas Hardy’s Ale (2003 - 2008). I’m really surprised this brew is not flat!

750ml bottle shared by alexsdad06 @rbsg-pbgh GT. Still-amber. A-sweet caramel-med malt, pear. T-follows with a slight oxidation.

Bottle shared by Jason on the opening night of RBSG, thanks! Poured a hazy amber gold with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was sweet with caramel and sweet grains with a bit of wheat definitely present. Flavor was more mellow than the aroma with light caramel and the wheat coming more to the forefront.

An unclear orange beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet with strong wood notes - slightly towards port wine. The flavor is sweet with notes of prunes, wood, and alcohol. I miss more complexity.

One of the best aromas of any beer I have ever had. This was in my basement for over a year, in the dark. It exploded out of the bottle as soon as the cap was partially removed. Immediately an outstanding aroma of wheat, fruit, and white wine. Orange, cloudy, with some sediment and a head that remains until the end of the beer. Alcohol is hidden well in the flavor, but here the beer disappoints. There is a minor herbal character and the taste of Belgian yeast. Overall it is too dry for my taste. I prefer a sweeter barleywine. Heavy palate; great, smooth mouthfeel.

750mL bottle from HopsorDie, thanks! Shared with bucknaked on 4/30/2005.
The amount of wavy yeast lines sitting in suspension at the bottom is ridiculous. Pour is a red-amber, VERY hazy with a quickly dissipating off-white/beige head. Aroma of cider vinegar, prunes soaked in brandy, plums, soured apricots, a strong dose of caramel and a good sour wheat twang. Not particularly full in aroma, but the notes there are quite interesting and give a nice raw vintage appeal to it (though perhaps a bit too cidery in the end). Flavor shows a good deal of sherry notes, light mandarin oranges, more unripe nectarines and apricots and a good base of caramel malt. Earthy notes are quite dominant on the finish, with more sour apple cider coming through and some dry peppery notes. I like the acidity level, which is particularly high for an American beer and even high for a wheat wine. The body is another story though, sad and tired, the carbonation level is extremely low, the body is very watery and the gritty sediment does not help in such a watery body. They sure put a hell of a lot of time in to these, it seems, why don’t they cork it? Still, a great wheat wine, and very stylish, IMHO.

Wow. Either this thing ages really well or I was having an off day when I reviewed the 2002 bottle. Dark copper color with a thick beige head that lasted pretty well. Thin and quick lacing. Huge aroma of wheat, malt, vanilla and oak. Rich, smooth body, with a complex blend of flavors. Wheat, sweet fruit, caramel and malt have nice interplay. Alcohol is hard to detect but a peppery aftertaste of it does come through periodically. The finish is round and wheaty, with the oak character asserting itself. Add to that I was really feeling the alcohol by the end of this bottle. A great beer.

Bottled, thanks hopsrus! Cloudy reddish amber. Aroma of wood, vanilla and rhubarb. Sweet and mature. Rich and softly malty with lovely malt structure. Some toffee and vanilla, lightly salty. Elegant and very complex. Excellent.
