Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with cacao nibs and vanilla beans
The reign of Black Tuesday was destined to grow with the creation of Chocolate Rain. This decidedly decadent version of our bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout was treated with TCHO cacao nibs and juicy, fresh vanilla beans. Rich in chocolate and vanilla, with hints of oak, it truly puts the “imperial” in imperial stout.

Thanks to Beer Savant for sharing a 2013 vintage bottle during his 50th birthday bash. The beer pours obsidian black with a thin foamy beige head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon and vanilla. Thick and syrupy body with flavors of bourbon-infused fudge, vanilla, burnt malt and coffee. The finish is boozy with a chocolate liqueur aftertaste. This is one of those love-it-or-hate-it sippers but I really liked it.

RS Exclusive 2013 bottle shared by Adam Jackson. After smelling the snifter in front of me all I got was hot bourbon. Intense booze. To my surprise the taste was way more complex then I could have imagined. Taste is heavily sweet with a lot of vanilla, wood, chocolate cake batter and sherry notes. I really couldn’t believe the variety of sweet flavors. Thick body, low carbonation, finishes with a nice hot alcohol burn. At 19.5 % of course you are going to pick up alcohol. I’d love to see a bottle aged three years would do. Anyhow… this is a wonderful stout if anybody was going to ask me. A masterpiece. I was even singing a parody of Prince’s “Purple Rain” for a few hours after I drank this.

RS Exclusive 2013, Paid just under $40 for a few of these via my membership. Received via my trustee, EHammond1 who is a bomb dog! Opened July 4th with friends.
A - Pours pitch black but not oily. It pours a lot like a dark liquor like rum. Ya know, like sticky, sort of moves around the glass like rubbing alcohol, has huge almost arrogant alcohol legs that persist for days. This beer wants you to know that it’s not screwing around. No head, almost completely still in the glass.
S - Well, the nose is burnt oak, rubbing alcohol, insanely sweet and chocolate. The chocolate is the biggest thing on the nose. Vanilla is big but it’s overshadowed by the booziness.
T - The taste is so much better than the nose. The booze is nowhere near as insane as the nose since the nose is so boozy. The vanilla beans are jerks in how they coat your mouth and stick around for half an hour later. The chocolate is almost like swishing around dark cocoa in your mouth. Bourbon is there but at almost 40 proof, there’s no booziness to this her at all.
M - This is a big beer but it’s slick, sweet, resinous and a hint of medicinal along with the boozy heat.
O - Chocolate Rain, I was afraid of this beer. So afraid that I waited until a chance to split this bottle 10 ways. Unlike Melange 3, Black Tuesday and White Chocolate,I was convinced that this beer would be the one high ABV Bruery beer that I couldn’t take on by myself. I was convinced this beer needed only 1 ounce and done. Then, I tasted it and realized I could easily drink an entire bottle myself. It’s a delicious beer fresh and I’m looking forward to trying it with some age. It falls short on nose and appearance. Everything else is perfect.

ZEBF13 pours black, no foam. smell is bourbon, realy thick, boozy, chocolaty, WAAWTCH . VERY nice ! Re-rate. Bottle from 2012, sampled on new years eve 2016-2017 together with aminatchime. Smell is rather boozy , but ok for the abv. Taste is really intense, chocolate faded a bit. Still really full, bourbon, oak. Very nice ! Same score remains

Big thanks to Leighton for muelling me the remainding 1/4 bottle or so from a previous weeks tasting. 22/04/13 @CBC, Londres. Dark black with a very thin tan head that dissipates edgeward as bubbles. Nose is dark malt, marmite, booze, dark fruits, black forest gateux, demerara sugars, light smoke. Taste comprises roast malt, bitter dark chocolate, dark fruits, molasses, leather, treacle toffee, very rich in flavour and on the sweet side, however it holds together well to remain drinkable. Full bodied with moderate carbonation, slightly cloying, warming alcohol in the finish. Good stuff, again one to share between many but very drinkable for such a high ABV.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with medium tan head that lasts awhile leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is strong chocolate, wood, booze, and vanilla. Thin mouthfeel with very strong cocoa nibs flavor, vanilla, and roast. Alcohol present as it warms, but not overpowering. Really enjoyed this one, a very impressive imperial stout from the Bruery.

Bottle. Chocolate, ash and alcohol aroma. Black with small head. Sweet chocolate syrup malt and moderately bitter herbal hops flavor. Moderately alcoholic finish. Nice dessert drink (went well with a Little Debbie’s Dunking Stick).
