Friendship Brew Black Saison

The final beer of this tasting was Green Flash’s take on the Black Saison, their Friendship Brew at 5.7%. I heard from Dominique Friart last week that they followed the same recipe but they must have done more than use different equipment! These beers were quite different, I think that the hopping schedule at the least must have been different... Green Flash’s version was a bit darker in color than St-Feuillien’s but had tons more aroma! An interesting peppery/spicy aroma wafted out of my glass. The flavor was pretty bitter & much more hop forward with some pine, pepper & spice notes. The bitterness pretty much masked the malts which didn’t do it for me.

Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma of licorice and roasted malt, with some anise character. Dry and roasted malty flavour with licorice

Bouteille 22oz. De couleur noire-brune et opaque. Nez d’anis, moyen d’épices (gingembre, léger de poivre) et de malt rôti, léger de levures fruitées (lime, traces de petits fruits foncés), légèrement herbeux et floral (herbes aromatiques). Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen ainsi qu’une texture légèrement crémeuse. Moyen goût de levures fruitées (lime et zeste, notes de petits fruits foncés) aux faibles notes sauvages et aigres avec un moyen goût épicé (moyen de poivre et de gingembre, traces de clou de girofle) avec des notes d’anis lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de malt rôti avec des traces de café puis progressivement un goût asséchant, assez herbeux et moyennement floral (houblons, herbes aromatiques, traces de menthe) vient se rajouter jusqu’en finale. Post-goût moyen-long et moyen-sec, moyen-léger amer de houblon herbeux et floral avec un goût de levures fruitées (zeste de lime) aux notes acides ainsi qu’avec un léger goût rôti.

Big longlasting creamy head. Aroma is spicy and sour-ish, dark malts, anise, sour dark berries, grass, citrus, chocolate. Taste is a little flat, anise, grass, heather, dark berries, minerals, spices. Medium bitterness. Interesting at most.

Flaske delt på Gavlen med Ovesen: en ny stilart - svart saison? Rett nok brygget man med det man hadde til rådighet på grdrn, og malten var gjerne mer røykt den gangen. Et interessant øl, men for lite gjærpreg gjør at den mangler personlighet.

Bottle. A big, dense, light beige head forms over a more or less black body. Spiced nose with ginger and some cardamom. Roasted, coffee-ish malts and a pleasant fruityness. Roasted malts, ginger, bubble gum, grassy hints and some bitterness in the flavor. Lightly funky, and that goes for the aroma too. Full body, nice carbonation and quite dry. Lasting roasted finish with the spices shining through. Spearmint too. Sure a nice one, but I’d like to see the saison yeast more evident. 130516

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of malt, pepper, yeast, ginger and mint. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with a mint and ginger spiced finish. Body is medium, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with minimal orange highlights and an enormous creamy brown head that left great lacing. The aroma was dryish, malty and a bit toasty with faint floral hops, a bit of funk and brett. The flavor was tart and bitter with roasty malts, coffee, burnt toast, vague fruity hops, floral hops and a bit of brett. Medium length finish and body. Ok.
