30/VIII/13 - 33cl bottle from the Emelisse brewery and restaurant (Kamperland) @ home - BB: VI/2014 (2013-816)

clear light blond beer, huge aery fluffy white head, unstable, falls down quickly to a smaller very aery big bubbled head, little adhesive. Aroma: lots of citrus fruits, some passion fruit and pineapple, hay, bit spicy, wheat impression. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: bit medicinal, bitter, very dry, zesty, grassy hops. Aftertaste: citrus, grapefruit, very bitter, grassy, spices, juniper berries, almost medicinal. Not bad, but wouldn't classify this as a real saison.

Enjoyed at the 4de Gents Bierfestival, 2013. The 33cl bottle pours with a clear deep gold body that supports an off white head. The aroma offers up lots of floral hops and saison spicy yeast notes with some cantaloupe and malt sweetness off in the background. The taste is crisp and fresh with saison yeasty spices and floral hop notes that get snappy and bitter to midway. It has a full firm body with lots of richness yet it remains balanced. I like it but it doesn’t arrive at the lighter and more refreshing level of most Belgian crafted Saisons I have had.

Bouteille @ 4de Gentse Bierfestival.

Bottle. Bright golden yellow with a fine head. Cloudy. Grassy, citrus aroma, clean bready malts, spicy yeast. Bready malt, lemon, crackers, pepper. Malt gets rich in the middle, then dries out completely. Very good no-nonsense saison. Dry and spicy, clean, refreshing. Seems like a different beast to what some of the previous raters had.

Tower of yellowish-cream, fine & dense head, and a finger of initially clear golden beer; shards of lace. Rather oppressive spicy aroma, yeasty. Dry spices, more than a hint at ureum. Toasted, "hot" flavour, some esters, and again the idea of a jumble of spices and other grains - but more probably the yeast barfing up all kinds of byproducts. Burning MF, quite (grist)slick, spritzy. Hint at acidity (buttermilk) in the aftertaste. Kees, don’t tell me you read Markowski first, and fell for the myth of the high fermentation temperatures. Or is it the yeast...? Nowhere refreshing enough for the Saison idea.

Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a clear light straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeasty with some acidic notes. The flavour is dry, medium sour with lots of apple acidity on the super smooth palate. One of the best saisons i’ve had.

There’s yeastiness in aroma and taste. Some sweetness too. Tastes quite like a Weizen until the bitter hop taste comes through to clean things up at the end.

Clear golden colour, white head. Aroma of bubblegum, sweets, banana, cloves, yeast and wheat. Light hoppy flavour, malts, candy, wheat and yeast. Dry, bitter finish, lingering bitter, malts, light honey notes.

33cl Bottle from the brewery, thanks to Martinus! Hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma of pale malts, light sweet floral note, yeast, quite dry. Flavour is very dry, bitter, yeast, pale malts, light floral sweetness again, firm bitter finish. Light-bodied. Good, but not as refreshing as I hoped.
