Our Grand Prestige, brewed with four different malts, is also described as barley wine. In the ripe, full taste, bitter and sweet are remarkably well-distinguishable.
The taste of Hertog Jan Grand Prestige is appreciated by connoisseurs and enthusiasts far beyond our borders, as proven by, among other things, the golden awards at various renowned beer competitions.
As Grand Prestige is stored for longer, that wonderful taste develops even further. After a few years, the taste is reminiscent of a beautiful old port wine.

Fra flaske på RBHD-treff hos OG mars-15: oh, yes! Mørkebrun med højt skum. Saftig, rund, harmonisk. Nydelig god. Boozy aroma, og farlig lettdrikkelig for sin vinkelhastighet. Vi er nå på oppløpssiden i kveld, og denne er i tetskiktet.

Shared bottle at RB/HD at OGJ’s 03.03.15. Brown. Persistent, beige head. Strong aroma of alcohol, dark malt and fermented fruits. Similar taste, with surprisingly decent drinkability.

Bottled. Sweet and spicy, with strong Belgian yeast presence. Nice enough, not up there with the best abts.

0.75l bottle of the 2009 edition, courtesy of Borresteijn who gave it to us several years ago (huge thanks Rob!). We figured that it had aged long enough. :) Opened with just a faint pop, but the carbonation was still there. Daaaark amber-brown body with a medium sized white head. Heavy malty taste, dusty - some oxidation, raisins, not much else but still pleasant. Nice, heavy malty taste, plum, well balanced, some "dusty" oxidized notes, not too complex, but the alcohol is hidden insanely well and the taste is very, very pleasant. Dangerously drinkable in a way, unless you’re a rabid hop head - but you wouldn’t go for a quad then, would you. In any case, a very good drink that I was damn happy to finally try!

Classic Dutch ’massive ale’ (or quad as we call this now), dark, with malty profile, candied fruits, explicitly sweet taste, bit cloying even, yeasty, agreeable spicy notes, quite complex, warming alcoholic finish. I liked this years ago but I’m not sure how it evolved since then, but from what I heard, it has only gone downhill from where it was twenty-odd years ago. I guess this begs a re-rating, but until I get there (because there simply are too many other - decent - beers to sample), consider this an anachronistic rating, only referring to the one I had in Holland in 2003 (?).

30 cl bottle @ hotel room, Amsterdam, BBE 12/2015
Aroma is sweet with raisins, dark fruits and syrupy tones. Also some pear esthers. Flavour is sweet with lots of raisins, brown sugar and ripe fruits. Also alcohol is present, but it mostly just balances (or tries to) the sweetness. Both aroma and flavour remind me of La Trappe Quad – this is just more sweet. Sweet all the way.
