Dark Sour Ale

Changeling is an enchanting blend of dark sour ales aged in whiskey and wine barrels that were inoculated with Brettanomyces and lactobacillus. It pours a deep ruby color with touches of gold at the edges of the glass. Leading with plum and toasty malt, the flavor transmutes into a soft tartness, with notes of earthy, funky Brett and a touch of lingering caramel to create a delicate balance.

Medium brown. No head. The nose is woody, bit of whisky, and also vinous, and quite fruity. On the palate, there's tartness, and definitely vinous character. Light brett, and it finishes with bretty dryness, too, but the barrel seems to have left some sweetness. Interesting character. This is complex...not necessarily loving it, but I appreciate the wildly complex character.

750 c&c shared by Marcus. Pours dark, ruddy brown with a tan head. Aroma of plums and oaky wood. Med + body or better. Flavor is plum, oak, red berry and a touch of Brett, I think. Quite delicious. Recommended.

750 ml corked and caged bottle purchased at Harry’s Liquor in Leawood, Kansas. 020117-1 on the label. The pour is a hazed brown ruby copper with a one inch foamy light tan head. The aroma is tart sour black cherry fruit, Brett funk, and nice oak barrel. As the beer warms, really soft and nice red wine character emerges. The taste introduces a bit of roast malt, and then opnes up to the clean sour tart black cherry, red wine tannins, funk leather, and wood barrel towards the back. Also a bit of whiskey warmth in the back. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft natural carbonation with the cherry sweet, fruit tart, sour, Brett funk finish. Nice.
