A straw-coloured bitter which initially seems sweet, but a complex dry, hoppy taste soon predominates.

Probably the best example of the traditional Black Country style of bitter. No better partner to a lunchtime snack!

Cask at the Red Lion, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. Orange-gold, clear as you like, with a white Northern head. Sulphur aroma enhanced to no end by orange peel, clove and yeast roll notes. Taste is standard bittersweet with an edge of sulphur. Simple but clean. When served spot on (as I’m having it now), it’s a real treat.

Bottle shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear orange golden color, medium sized white head. Smell and taste malts, straw, bitter. Tastes almost like a pilsener instead of a bitter. Decent enough beer, nothing wrong with it, just not very interesting.

Cask at The Great Western during the RateBeer Black Country Bus Bash. Pours clear, yellow-gold with a light, foamy white head. Sweet dough in the nose, some hay. Light sweet flavor with dry dough and light bitter straw. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate sweetness in the end, some further sugary dough, white bread. So so. Quite basic.

Bottle from The Beer Parlour, Chesterfield. Lovely example of a classic, English Best Bitter. Makes me wish I was drinking it after I’d spent a 14 hour shift ploughing fields. Rather than a few hours sanding skirting boards...

Cask, one-third pint, GBBF 2013. Dark golden body colour. Naked at the top. Malt-fruity nose, smell of bread and faint citrus. Mid-sweet caramel malts offset by bittersweet fruits. Jam-like. Fresh bitter ending. Standard Brit Bitter (London Olympia 15.08.2013).
