Has been proclaimed CAMRA’s Midland stout of the year repeatedly. Dark malts and roasted barley combine to produce a smouldering “chocolate” flavour followed by a mouth embracing bitterness. It’s really bitter and black.

Bottle at JF’s - 12/10/12. Pours mid black with a decent coffee head. Roast malt nose, touch of coffee, hint of chocolate, a little pasticy. Great roasted malt taste, milk chocolate and coffee in support, spice and a touch of smoke. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a smooth, creamy, smoked finish. Really enjoyed this one after a succession of blander pales and bitters prior to it!

June 2010: A pint taken at ’The Plough’ in Worcester, very close to the cathedral. The beer is very dark, with next to no head, just a tan coloured collar surrounding the inside of the glass. Smokey malts, peat bogs, earthy smoke feel to the smell. The taste was coffee, dark chocolate and smoked hams. I thought the body a bit thin for the flavours and on the sweet side of dry. Different and OK.

Cask-conditioned at the Staffordshire Beer festival, Seven Stars, Bristol 6/10/10. Opaque black with a thin, tan head. Massive, smoky aroma with plenty of charcoal, dark chocolate and a hint of hedgerow fruit. Flavour had more intense roastiness, chocolate and a huge, lingering bitter finish. Excellent.

500ml bottle. Pours pitch black with a frothy, dirty brown head. Aroma is faint milky coffee. Not much to start on the taste, some cream, lots of bitter coffee on the finish.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours an opaque black with a rough light brown head. Lovely aroma of dry and leathery tarry burned malts. Medium body, sweet burned malts, vanilla, tar and ashes with a whiff of peaty smoke. Quite some malty bitterness. A lovely Stout. 190110

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. Pitch black with a small tan head. Sweet roast malt, coffee aroma. Slipped down smooth. Good chocolate, roasty flavour that finished bitter. The smoky aspect was in the background somewhere and pretty subtle. Not bad at all.
