0.5 Litres in the ‘Berliner Republic’ a fun bar in Berlin where the beer prices go up and down like a beer stock market: there is a big screen to see how the prices are moving, choose a beer than is cheap obviously! I had a lovely tour of the brewery a long time ago, well before beer sites came into being and we were given some small barrels of this beer to pour ourselves in the tasting lounge: great fun. This wasn’t the best draught Alt I’ve had, but it wasn’t the worst either, nor was it as fresh as the beer I remember from that brewery trip. It looked fine though, nice brown colour, a cross between mahogany and oak: on top sat a thin off-white covering of bubbles, which soon left the scene. The smell was semi-sweet malty molasses with a hop backdrop. The flavours are malty at first, the hops arriving a bit later in the mouth feel to give the beer a mini bite and a mild bitter finish. Body depth about right, not rich or deep, but enough to carry the flavours and alcohol content without any problems.

Bottle. Clear brownish amber with an off-white head. Gentle, refined aroma of toasted caramel and raisins, some herbs. Rather watery. Sweet with fruit and caramel before bitterness that kicks in rather early. Some metallic notes with the herbs.

Hey, Alt from a 50cl can. Cool. It pours brown with copper hues and tall creamy tan head. The aroma hints at roasted malts, spicy hops and a touch of caramel. The taste is similar but I think the spicy hops are creating a metallic like note too. Behind the hops are soft notes of malts, roasted malts and some earthy hops.

500 ml bottle@home: clear caramel amber coloured with an off-white head, smells like sweet roasted malt, caramel & some spice, taste is sweet upfront with roasted malts, caramel, slightly bitter hops, some prunes & raisins, aftertaste unfortunately has some off-flavours, bitter with lots of burned toast, minor spice

Color looks like Lipton Ice Tea, head as well: Pretty thick, beige color. Smells kind of stale. Taste is pretty dull, it’s not bad but there just nothing there. Low body, low carbo.

Bottle 50 cl. Amber clear with a large and lasting offwhite head. Aroma of malt, ligth roasted and if I put my nose in the beer there is some caramel sence. The taste is quite sweet with a light bittersweet ending.

Clear brown with an amber glow. Nice thick beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, sweet caramel with a toasted bread keynote. Flavour of toasted bread, caramel, malts. Rather bitter finish from both roasted malts and some hops bitterness. (From 500mL bottle)

0.33l bottle. Pours a clear red/chestnut body with a fluffy white two-fingersized head. Nose is bread, malts and not much more. Tastes really not that nice. Lively carbonated and light-bodied. Really grainy with lots of boiled vegetables, dishwasher water and a bitter, soapy finish. No thanks, this was not for me.
