On tap @ Deschutes, Portland. Pours black with a small mocha head. Aroma is heavy roasted malts with oak and bourbon barrels, as well as tobacco and muscovado. Full creamy body with a soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with roasted malts and dark fruits, raisins and prunes, as well as oak, leather, chocolate and vanilla. Long sweet finish with lots of dark fruits lingering.

Bottle @ Greg’s dump. Pours a dark brown appearance, fairly clear with a thin dark brown head. Bourbon, roasty, dark chocolate, a bit woody, anise aroma. A bit hot, rich chocolate, oaky, moderate bourbon, dark fruity, anise flavor. Kind of boozy but kind of fun.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours a jet black color with a medium brown head. A big sweet sugary nose with coffee and cocoa. The flavor is rich berries, oak, tannins, coffee, roast, more dark fruit, oil, some cocoa, vanilla. Very complex big beer. A mostly slick oily palate. Very big. One of my favorites so far. The currants don’t distract at all. Finishes dry with anise and pepper.

Taster at Standard Market during a Monday Deschutes Tap Takeover. I got to compare this to a XXIV, rare opportunity for anniversary beers for me. This one looked just a little lighter. Nose of sherry and vanilla over dark roasted malt. The taste has a pronounced cherry cola note absent in the XXIV, but it cuts across the dark roast malts. Besides the sherry notes, this tips a bit to a red wine taste, too. So much stuff going on here that I didn’t catch the bourbon notes I usually find in a BBA beer. Probably that is helping to bring up more of the fruity character from the dates and figs.

I bought a Howler of this at Liquor Shed for $11.99. That’s 2 true pints for $6 a piece. Nice.

A- it pours black, no light shines through. Small head of foam, yeah, but swirling the beer in my glass brings a decent head of foam and also some lacing. It looks both potent and delicious.

S- big Bourbon, vanilla, caramel malt, dark fruits....so good of a nose.

T- all sorts of complex flavours going on here. Big but not overpowering Bourbon with tasty vanilla and chocolate, dark fruits of the fig kind, dark fruit of the black currant kind that adds just a wee bit of tartness. I was a little feared when I first tried the XXV in a bottle when I read the label and saw the mention of black currants...that and after reading about it on a post on BA. But man, I should never have doubted Deschutes’ brewing skills. This is killer good and ready to drink now!

M- just a tad under full bodied, or is it? Great medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is super and so is the fact that I no longer see the word mouthfeel underlined in red. It’s a real word now.

O- I admit, I’ve been a bit miserly about giving beers a perfect 5 when, perhaps, I should have. This is a perfect 5 for me though the bottles, I think, need more time as per Deschutes’ putting a best after date. Cheers!
