Barrelholder Series: Barrel Aged Wild Double IPA

This elixir of hopped deliciousness draws upon several months in French oak barrels and a Brettanomyces refermentation to produce the complex, fruity aromas that even science can’t rush. The resulting luscious mosaic of flavour is a treat for the senses: for those precious few able to withstand temptation, this beer is also an excellent addition to any cellar.

473 ml can. Pours a dull amber with light head. Aromas of buttery oak, Brett, cottony muddled fruit, and toasted malts. Flavors of oak, orange, soft but bitter pine, and toasty malts. Works for me. Packaged Sept 2022 so maybe the Brett has time to do its job. Really nice.

A lightly hazed golden ipa with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity biscuit malt with resinous floral hops, and loads of Brett, ground cherry, light lactic notes, very nice. In mouth, a nice biscuit malt with resinous floral hops, light Brett, light scotch barrel and notes, very nice. On tap at brewery.

Great big white foam on top of a clear brownish-gold body, the aroma is soft wood and caramel and plenty of brett yeast, pretty good. The flavour is a very chewy deep hoppy affair with plenty of caramel notes, sweet hops, and average bitterness. Full on the mouth, good oiliness, alcohol is well hidden. Next mistake, no more mistakes...... a pretty good beer here, though not in the vein of 1989's Megadeth masterpiece Rust in Peace. Just because I ain't saying it, don't mean I ain't thinkin' it. Next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away....

Light tan, thin head. Some brett notes, but on the palate these take a back seat to sweet malts. Maybe some diacetyl in there as well. Probably too much alcohol, not liking the balance much.

500mL bottle, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is very funky, with lots of wild yeast, oak barrels galore, and bitter piney hops. Flavour is surprisingly complex, with complex wild yeast, oak barrels, and subdued bitter hops. Wild and complex, with an acceptable bitterness. I'm always doubtful of BA or wild IPAs, but this is really quite nice.
