This version was brewed in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of our Cherry Stout, another specialty beer that was first brewed in 1988 as a nod to a local homebrew club in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It has grown to be one of the most anticipated beers we brew at the brewery every year.
We brewed a version of Cherry Stout in 2001 using oak chips and cherry pits. In 2018, we decided to brew with whole cherries and oak chips. Coming in at 9.0% alcohol by volume, this commemorative batch is a celebration of what Cherry Stout means to us.

Cherry and lots of roast. Black pour with good head and lacing. Some citrus. Nut. Creamy consistency. Bitter tangy end.

Bottle thanks to Rob. Pours black with small tan head that lasts. The aroma is roast, oak, cherry skin. Slick body, oak, sweet cherry, roast, dark chocolate, very good.

Loses the subtlety of original Cherry Stout, instead indulging in hard roasted malt notes (not bad!) slathered with dark chocolate, molasses, and maraschino cherries (bad!). Sweetness intensifies as the pint warms; brings out hints of worcestershire sauce, raisin, and soy. Not a big fan of fruited stouts, so finishing this pint's a chore.

Draft. A- Chocolate, mild booze. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Chocolate, tobacco, leather, cherry, mild soy. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- I've now had the regular cherry stout, the whisky barrel aged, and this one. All are fairly similar, but I would say this is the best from sheer complexity. It has a fuller richer flavor and is really balanced. Would like some of this to hold on to for a while.

Bottle. Cherry, oak, chocolate malt, and dry hay aroma. Black with small brown head. Moderately sweet cherry, chocolate caramel malt, bourbon, oak, and mildly bitter dry hay flavor. Nice body and balance.

Pours a dark mahogany with a burnt, dark-beige to tan head showing moderate-to-low retention. Undetermined clarity.
Nose is fruity cherry that is tart and lively, yet well-attenuated with a raspberry-cranberry edge to it. Ashen black patent malt lies behind it with hints of dry vanilla and just a touch of light caramel to lightly balance. No alcohol or flaw. It's not ultra-complex, but then, I don't think this beer was ever trying to be. Rather it just presents a fruity, tart, cherry-forward, yet roasty, dark stout. The alcohol is well-concealed and there is no abundance of sugar, nor any messy ester.
In the mouth it's very dry, yet with a slick-to-silky texture with light touches of syrup. Both malt and cherry are highly attenuated and it comes off tart, dry and roasty, yet somehow succeeds in not being too dry or astringent. Meaty cherry juice, ashy black malts and hints of caramel and molasses with low but engaging carbonation. Been a long time since I've had the regular cherry stout, but this seems as good or better than I remember.

On tap at Maduro. Pours black with a wood brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has earthy dark grains and roasted malts with a bit of cherry and oak underlying. Flavor has dark grains and cherry with light roast and dark chocolate supporting.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brn/blk witha small dark tan head. Aroma of dark treacly malt with a touch of cherry. Med + body. Flavor of smooth, sweet dark malt, chocolate, some wood, and a nice touch of slightly sour/tart cherry. There is a lot of fruit. After the flavors die down, a smoky aspect comes forth. Really good stuff.
