This version was brewed in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of our Cherry Stout, another specialty beer that was first brewed in 1988 as a nod to a local homebrew club in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It has grown to be one of the most anticipated beers we brew at the brewery every year.

We brewed a version of Cherry Stout in 2001 using oak chips and cherry pits. In 2018, we decided to brew with whole cherries and oak chips. Coming in at 9.0% alcohol by volume, this commemorative batch is a celebration of what Cherry Stout means to us.

Bottle that has been cellared for ages. Pours almost like used motor oil. Aromas are lovely... cherry and vanilla, chocolate and leather. Flavor is kind of decent up front but they cherry flavor is strong as hell and kind of edgy, even after years in the cellar. Some sips are pretty good, some are overly fruity. Never really cared for the cherry stouts and this is no exception.

A deep dark stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, light cherries, light Brett, pleasant. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, loads of Maraschino Cherries, light coffee, pleasant.

Beer #8 of 17 (8 beers on either side of #8000 plus the magic 8000th itself) Deep, pitch black coloured body with a jet black and oily glow and a nice, two to three centimetre tall rich brown head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of rich chocolate, roasted coffee, tons of lactose, oatmeal, cream, toffee, caramelised sugar and oh yeah, tons of rich and sour cherries - very nice in the nose with a lot of frobust smells and a lot of complexity for sure. Medium to Full-bodied; Super rich chocolate malt bite at first with some roasted coffee notes (full beans) with a light camraliesed sugar and toffee flavour with perhaps even molasses in as well, but then comes the tart and soured cherries that hit towards the end and do wonders in terms of balance and tempering the deep, roasted notes with only some light sugars and the sour cherries finishing it off. Aftertaste shows the robust chocolate, earthy and sweet notes from the malts with a light hit of coffee and some noticeable vanilla flavours, but the sour cherries finish it off nicely and give an amazing complexity towards the end that hits very, especially on top of a style that is usually hard to make an imprint on (aside from other deep flavours). Overall, it's hard to say that this one could have been done any better as there really is no astringency, alcohol or pungent bites (it's only been aged almost two years by me), but the soured, tart cherries and the large malt profile with caramelised sugars, roasted notes and some chocolate/coffee/oats around make this even harder to fathom. A great beer, and despite the not-so-high scores, I'm glad I saved this as beer #7999 - although I would have been completely fine as this as #8000, especially as a Michigander. This was the eighth beer of my 8000th celebration and it's hard to imagine it getting better from here, but hopefully it will! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Greenville Beer Exchange in Greenville, South Carolina on 31-May-2018 for US$3,24 sampled at my house in Washington on 22-April-2020, as Beer #8 (of 17) of the 8000th Beer Celebration!

Bottle. Black pour with almost no head. Aroma of dark chocolate and cherries. The first sip brings a bitterness that quickly fades with subsequent sips into a sweeter palate full of cherry and bitter dark chocolate. Warming and a bit boozy.

Rating number 3,800. Bottled on 5/10/2018; one year ago to the very day. Opaque black pour. Brief tan head is gone in a moment. Roasted malt nose has obvious cherry notes. Big notes of bittersweet chocolate and sour cherries. Additional notes of coffee and burnt sugar. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Some boozy notes as well. Quite nice and worth seeking out.

Pours black and has an aroma of dark roasted malt and sour cherries. The flavor is on the sweet side with roast chocolate malt but also full of cherries, giving it some tartness. It's medium to full bodied. It's quite good though the combo of tart cherries and imperial stout isn't my favorite.

12oz bottle at Brian's. Aroma is sour with roasted malt and cherry notes. Taste is similar with some chocolate and cherry peat notes. It's ok.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out medium roast, moderate cherry presence, and a little vanilla. Flavour is loaded with rich cherries upfront, followed by a touch of vanilla, some tartness, and maybe a hint of oak. Really nice cherry expression here. Very good.
