Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Elegant, innovative, complex: Black Tuesday provides a uniquely elevated beer-drinking experience unlike any other. Rich, complex flavor from time spent aging in bourbon barrels mingles effortlessly with distinct notes of crème brûlée, poached figs, and milk chocolate. Surprisingly smooth at 19.7% ABV, this is a beer you won’t soon forget.

Bottle, shared at a tasting in Tokyo on 1/8/17. 2016 issue. Color is very dark, but not quite black/opaque. Off white head, not much. Aroma’s: berries, sweetish, alcohol, whiskey. Retronasal it’s sweetish, alcohol, molasses. Flavor is moderate to full sweet, alcohol. Strong alcohol feel obviously, but not overly so. Medium to full bodied (I would have expected it to be syruppy, but no). Finishes with some roast and some bitterness. Didn’t quite live up to the expectations, but I heard this issue is not the best. Hopefully my 2012 and 2014 bottles are better.

A bottle on Black Christmas 2016 at 12 Kings. Vintage 2016 (ABV 20.3%). Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is bourbon, dark fruits, chocolate. Taste is pretty the same with moderate to high sweetness. Crazy stuff.

Sampled from a bottle outside Zwanze Day. Pours black, with a small, tan ring. The nose is immense bourbon and baker’s chocolate, with some mild coffee, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, and molasses. Very sweet, with a bit of roasty bitterness. Very heavy body, creamy, sticky, and thick. This is an experience, but there’s a surprising lack of booziness and warming.

Much-hyped imperial stout, hard to obtain so thanks a lot to Bart for putting this on the menu at the American beer tasting in Bruges. Thinnish, off-white, fairly quickly dissipating head, black colour with translucent burgundy edges. Powerful and enticing bouquet of all kinds of things: chocolate liqueur, kahlua, brown rum, chestnuts, vanilla, chocolate sauce, bourbon, wet leather, cappuccino, espresso, old port wine, some varnish-like solvents but inconspicuously integrated into this impressive whole. Very ’noble’ and well-controlled yet intense candied sweet onset, Belgian chocolates and Liège pear syrup, balanced with a soft background sourishness and beautifully restrained ’meaty’ umami; soft carbo and evidently very thick, oily, creamy mouthfeel; thick layers of caramelly, nutty and lovely chocolatey malts, sweet in onset but turning gently and ’rounded’ bitter in the end, fondant chocolate and coffee liqueur, some peppery hops for balance and the expected ’force’ of cognac- and rum-like alcohol, but somehow this alcohol, however strong, manages to avoid intrusive astringency. I had a rum barrel aged version before but this one is much better, more to the point and less tiringly boozy; this deserves its cult status to the full.

Bottle shared by someone at another table @ Himmeriget. Pours viscous black with dark brown hints with a a small dark mocha head that leaves some sparse spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and sugary with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge charred wood, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, raisins, ketjap manis, coconut milk, moist soil and bourbon alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, salty, malty and boozy. Mouthfeel is soft, oily, viscous, syrupy, tiny astringent, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet, bitter and salty with roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, raisins, ketjap and bourbon. Big, intense and a bit too big and salty to suit me. Better than expected though...

Refrigerated 2015 75 cl brown bottle poured in a snifter. Black with dark brown highlights and small beige head. Aroma is bourbon, thick body, low carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is bourbon, burnt caramel, prune, and alcohol. Reminiscent of a strong dark Belgian ale.
