Draft at the Great British Beer Festival 2013. Poured a vicious black colour with a big, dense tan head. Complex aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice and with some sweet fruity notes. Full, velvety mouth feel. Bitter coffee initial flavours with dark fruit and vanilla not far behind. Fruity hop notes on the palate with burnt malt finishing with warming alcohol.

On tap at Gbbf 2013. Very dark brown beer lasting tan head. Vanilla aroma. its amazing. I mean I don’t like imperial stout in general but this is fantastic. Not stupid barrel aged good intense chocolate. Good imp stout.

Weird beer, in a good way. It’s a typical great IRS with a taste of roasted malt and roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Yet, it also has some distinct hoppiness of th Sorachi Ace hop. Great balance.

Tap at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, chilling by the canal 20th June 13. Elegant on the pour, fair head on it, needs to rest. Hops on the nose, thiner palate and lighter than the barrel aged versions . Very drinkable, but prefer the BA

Bottle at Borefts 2012 - Bodegraven. Pours black-brown with a creamy brown cap. Dark malt nose, some burnt wood, whiskey. Big sweet flavor with dark fruits, decent alcohol punch, dry burnt out wood, burnt grassy bitterness, nice bitter dark chocolate. Full bodied with fine carbonation. And its chewy. Warm finish with dynamic dark malt character, dark sugars, plums, moderate roast and cocoa. Pretty good balance overall.

Bottle from Bierkoning, many thanks. Black color with medium espresso beige head. Maltz aroma with floral hops. Roasted malt, milk chocolate, citrus hops. Very interesting coffee bitter finish with citric hop bitter after taste. Alcohol is dangerously hidden. Extremely tasty beer.

Bottled, almost a year old. Dark color, short brown head. Aroma is of a good RIS: chocolat, roasted malts, molasses. The sorachi ace brings some minty freshness to it, actually a wonderful combination. Balancing is very delicate here I guess, so might be at the perfect age at the moment. Did I see they tried a coconut version of this one as well? I can imagine the mix, as the hops give it a coconutty feel as well. In taste there’s a wonderful mix of sweet biscuity malt and robust chocolat, with a velvet blanket of mint on top. Stunningly good. Just the right amount of sweetness for me. I remember I tried this beer fresher as well and then the minty notes of the sorachi ace were a bit too present in the aroma and bitterness. But with a small year of developing, it’s absolutely amazing.

330ml bottle. Black colour with average to huge, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Dark malty aroma with a chocolate touch, some leather, a touch of vanilla, hoppy overtones with a citrus touch. Taste is dry dark malty, a touch of leather vanilla and orange.
