650mL bottle, pours black with an amber tinge and a large lingering beige head. Nose brings out light roast, some metallic notes, and moderate dry hops. Flavour is very dry, with both roasted malt and hops acting in equal unison on this one. Not that intense in flavours, but rather subdued. Palate is bone dry, with fairly lively carbonation. Finishes on dry, roasty and slightly hoppy notes. Good stuff - just missing a little oomph.

660ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with late awakening, average, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Herbal, resinous and minimally piney hop aroma, some lemon zest, dark malty basis with cautious hints of molasses and liquorice. Taste is weak bitter hoppy, minimally resimous and piney, cautious hints of lemon and lemon zest, dry dark malty basis with very cautious hints of molasses and liquorice. Could be even more agressively hopped for my taste.

Bottle split at JF’s, acquired from Cotteridge Wines, 4.7% ABV 21/07/13. Light black with a medium light tan head which retains well. Nose is roast malt, tropical fruits, bitter grapefruit, juicy hops, pine. Taste comprises bitter roast, bitter grapefruit, light cocoa, hops, good pine bite, blackcurrants. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish with a good dose of pine resin. A most decent CDA delivering lots of flavour for 4.7%.

Dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma of hops, roasted malts, coffee, citrus, hops touch. Bitter hops flavour, malts, coffee and chocolate. Bit thin body (logical for the ABV), lingering bitter hops and coffee. Very nice beer.

Sampled @ RBESG 13 Grand Tasting. Brown colour with a small beige head. Smells quite a lot of dark chocolate, "Haagse hopjes" (Dutch candy) and roasty. Tastes mostly roasty with some chocolate notes. Quite a dry beer, medium body and low carbo.

50 cl. bottle sampled @ RBESG 2013. Thx! to chriso & Boudicca. Blackish, very dark brown, mocha head. Smell is thick mocha, creamy, café au lait, roast, sweet sugar. Taste is sweet mocha, burned bark, roast, very, very dry, lasting roasted wood, tobacco, lingering burned bark,… Body is very, very dry. Good but far too much dry roast / roasted bark for me.

50cl Bottle at RBESG’13 Grand Tasting.Black colour, khaki head. Aroma of hard roasted malts, quite hoppy, grassy, citrus, tar, liquorice. Flavour is very dry, roasted malts, earth, hoppy, light citrus, grass, grape, bitter finish. Light-bodied. Very tasty stuff.

Bottled @ RBESG 2013 Grand Tasting. Dark color, short head. Aroma of roasted malts, bit licorice. Quite hoppy as well. Dry and bitter. The hard part in a black IPA is to get that balance between soft roast and hoppy bitterness right, but that’s where this beer succeeds. And especially with 4.5% it’s a marvellous job. Give us Mo(o)r(e) Illusion!

Bottle @ RBESG grand tasting. Dark brown color, medium sized beige head. Smell malts, some hops and roastyness. Taste is basically the same but very bitter and dry maltyness in the finish. Average body and carbonation. Quite like it.
